Week 5 - Back to work course
I really loved today’s session! We had a guest speaker, who taught us tips on how to get our CVs noted.
Three of the most important things that I will take with me from her presentation are:
1- “Follow instructions on the job advert.” So many people ignore the requests from recruiters when being asked for a cover letter or an application form besides the CV. This only makes their application end in the bin! Reading the advert and completing what is on request is essential, it says a lot about our personalities if we don't.
2- “Be yourself, and let that come through on your CV”. Sometimes we focus too much on listing what we have done or what titles we’ve had, and forget about who we are when writing our CVs. In our guest speaker’s words she said, “When someone’s personality comes through is what makes a CV shine.” This is crucial not only for the applicant but for the recruiter, as they will want to make you fit in the right company with the right team, and by seeing your personal traits you are allowing them to do this.
3- ”Apply for a job even if there are certain skills you haven't yet got, as the company will train you.” With this in mind, I remembered once applying for a job that I had never done before, I was a brave 19 year old, there were over 300 applicants, and I got it. The company said to me they wanted to fully train their new staff the way “they liked things done”. So, I will bare this in mind in future.
I feel grateful today for being given the opportunity to listen to inspirational women like Sarah. I will continue to watch and learn...
