Her skin feels damp, almost clammy, and soft voices echo through her ears, familiar though she cannot place them. Her body feels unfamiliar as she tries to sit up, fighting against uncooperative muscles stiff with disuse. Long-lashed lids lift open, little sparks of colour against the ceiling of the Medical Bay popping in her eyes, and Alyx opens her mouth, taking a deep breath of cool, fresh air. She remembers —
Darkness? A rock? The pain, all-encompassing, brutal. Arms carrying her, almost comforting. She could not put a face or name to the sensation. How long had she been asleep. Cypress, Raven, they would know. Damn it. She’d probably have to go to more sessions with Augustus.
Alyx knows where she is, at the very least. Despite the rarity of her injuries and illnesses, the curvature of metal above her is present throughout the Concord, and, logically, if she was injured, she would be in the Medical Bay. Logic. It comforts her, a little, that despite her body and the way it fights her, her mind is entirely functional. Pushing away her fears (brain damage, memory loss, inability to focus... would she be able to work?) she opens her mouth again, to speak this time, and finds it dry, barren as the desert planets. Straining for some noise, anything to emerge, she coughs, cringing at the pain the motion sends to her head. Was she concussed? Drawing what moisture she can to her mouth, a faint whisper emerges, strangled, and barely audible.
“Hello?”
