Any tips for a new digital artist? I watercolor all the time, and I've done sketches and graphic design, but I JUST ordered the Wacom Create for work but I also want to use it for fun.

(Pretty sizeable wall of text so I’m putting it under a cut)

Okay, I’ve emphasised quite a bit that I am far from an expert but I’ve had a few people ask me for art advice in the past so I will try to answer this as well as I can here.

Experiment. Go crazy. It doesn’t matter whether you choose Photoshop or Painter or some other program — you’re free to look up tutorials and observe how other artists work (and this is a good idea because you’ll get some idea of how layers work, how to mess around with layer modes, etc.) but in the end only you can decide for yourself what you like and how you want to approach things. There is no “right” way to do art.

Keep things simple. I wouldn’t get too hung up on details like having a thousand different kinds of brushes (or a specific set of brushes) — if you’re new to digital art (well, even if you’re not) that might just make things unnecessarily complicated. Places like deviantArt offer free brush packs so if you do want some variation, you can download some from there and test them out individually. Get rid of any that you don’t like or won’t use. However, always bear in mind that the kind of brushes you use do not automatically make your work better. It takes time and practice.

Play around with your tablet and your digital art program(s) of choice. A lot. It obviously has a different feel to working with traditional tools but it’s still just another art tool so familiarise yourself with them by using them frequently. Find out what it can/can’t do.

The next one doesn’t just apply to digital art but I feel that it needs to be said (and I often need to remind myself of this):

Do not let (the works of) others discourage you. There are TONS of absolutely amazing artists out there and the worst thing you can do is to allow it stop you from drawing just because you don’t think you’ll be able to reach their level. None of them started out being fantastic at art, and calling an artist “talented” often strikes me as a bit of a misnomer because there tends to be the underlying implication that he or she was born with some inherent trait that allows him/her to be better at art than others. I think that’s rubbish. It’s not talent; it’s persistence. I started out drawing stick figure comics with my brother — he didn’t continue drawing as he grew up but I did. My art skills stagnated in high school because I didn’t draw anything beyond the occasional doodle in my notebooks and most of my progress, I think, happened in the last 1-2 yrs because I made a habit of drawing a lot and drawing often. It doesn’t matter if there are artists who are both better and younger than you (there are). This is not a race. Don’t think that getting better fast is important because that’s just going to frustrate the hell out of you. Keep all your old artworks and look back on them later on (6 months, a year, whatever). You’ll be surprised by how far you’ll progress just by being consistent with your efforts.

These are basic tips but this is how I went about things when I started out and it’s still pretty much how I approach things now. Hope that helps!

Okay, okay... I can dilate my pupils at will... so I can focus on things in the distance or in the foreground, I can't explain it. For most people it's involuntary but a few people have the ability to make it voluntary. So I'll freak my friends out by purposely changing the size of my pupils. My mom's an eye doctor and it even freaks her out.

Hi! I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to publish this as lots of people have been asking me about the lookalikes on my post ^_^

(For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, this is the post. People have also added a couple more super cool lookalikes as time’s gone on, but yeah.)

So the ‘Sam’ is the cousin of tumblr user narcissistic-alcoholic. The guy is popularly referred to as ‘cousin Matt’ and and FAQ about him, as well as all the photos currently uploaded of him by narcissistic-alcoholic can be found here.

The Benny lookalike is relatively obscure, but I believe he’s the uncle of tumblr user martincrieffing. There’s only that one picture of him, and the original post with that on is here.

The guy dressed as Eleven is actually a really cool Eleventh Doctor cosplayer called Matt. His cosplay is awesome (and he commented on my post squee) :’D

Liam Dryden is the Ten lookalike. He’s a groovy Scottish YouTuber, so if you want to see more of him I suggest you head over to his YouTube channel and check him out.

Obviously the friend’s friend’s mother who looks like River was spotted by this tumblr user. I linked it there just because she’s changed her URL and some of you might want to go follow her or whatever :)

That’s all of the main ones on the post, although I have been informed by about 50 people that I forgot to mention the mini Lucifer lookalike who’s been pretty popular on tumblr, who goes by ‘My Friend Caleb’.
