favourite proverb/saying from your language
I have SO MANY. Sadly, most of them apparently are not understood by other people speaking my language. Pasi keeps teasing me about en als mijn kat een koe was, kon ik ze melken bij de stoof (and if my cat were a cow, I could milk her in front of the fire = no ifs ). Not to mention Moeilijk gaat ook, zei Crispina, en ze roerde de pap met een stopnaald (you can also do it the hard way, Crispina said, mixing the porridge with a needle = you can do it the hard way but you shoudn’t). My mom read this one on a calendar as a kid and it’s been in the family since.
Basically, I use a lot of proverbs, but those are some of my favs, even if I don’t get to use them a lot. The ones I do use are more, well, commonplace.
Oh, honourable mention to dat is een waarheid als een koe (that’s as true as a cow). It’s simple, but hey, anyone who’s ever stood next to a cow can identify with it.
And also het kind met het badwater weggooien (throwing the child out together with the dirty bath water = doing away with the good while you should’ve just thrown out the bad) because it’s always conjured a vivid image in my mind.
(don’t know what this one is :( )
which languages do you speak/have you learned in school?
In school I learned French, English, Latin, Greek, German and Spanish. Later on I also acquired Flemish Sign Language (VGT).
I can speak English and VGT, can understand French well but can hardly speak it, I can read some Latin, can understand some Spanish, and can read the Greek alphabet. THAT’S ALL I REMEMBER FROM 4 YEARS OF CLASSICAL GREEK, discounting some loose words like hoi polloi etc.
