My first completed read for #koreanmarch! As I mentioned, my teen had actually checked this out and red it a while ago, which was enough cause for curiosity to move this one to the top of the stack. I normally don’t read a lot of crime/thrillers, but I did enjoy this. The final showdown made me think this would be amazing adapted as a movie, but overall, the structure of this book is sort of fragmented — different stories that lead into each other, which might be a challenge, adaptation-wise. I enjoyed the characters, and the many meditations on how most people get stuck on a track in their lives, whether that track is assassin, factory worker, prostitute, etc., and how difficult it is to change tracks and imagine a different life for yourself, even if your life is at stake. Or even to be fully aware of the parallel tracks, the different sorts of lives being led all around you. . . Happy to have picked it up. Had a great book club discussion with the family on Un Su Kim's The Plotters. The Plotters follows Rensang, an assassin for hire who works for Old Raccoon, the man who raised him in the Doghouse Library. In this world, plotters move around assassins & key powerful figures as though they are chess pieces on a board. This includes Reseng, his friends Trainer & Chu, & the mysterious & deadly Barber. But when things start to go wrong, Reseng has to decide whether to remain a passive player in the Korean underworld or take charge of his life once & for all. * Kim seems to have a better grasp on his male characters than his female ones & there were some unanswered questions left hanging. The ending was a little too rushed & overly dramatic. But I did get a lot more out of the ending after the family book club discussion. * There are lots of literary references (esp existential ones) as Reseng is an avid (but oddly disinterested) reader & similar themes from his books pop up now & then. The ending is definitely a callback to one of the books mentioned earlier. And, for what it's worth, my mom said that the English translation sounds like it is very close to the original Korean text.
