Squadron Wives

Rhys snorted. “I think it probably depends on the cave,” she said, mock-serious as though giving an important question due consideration. “Is it damp? Smelly? Infested with annoying little ankle-gnawing critters?” She taped a finger against her chin and frowned. “Oh wait, no, I’ve just described Coruscant, haven’t I? Never mind then.”
The smile she gave Mara was toothy but not unkind. Rhysati didn’t know the other woman well -- didn’t know her at all, really -- but a Rogue Squadron celebration was a Rogue Squadron celebration, and the fact that Luke Skywalker had abandoned the snubfighter’s cockpit in favor of a lightsaber before Rhys had donned the orange herself meant very little at a time like this. When one of their number was preparing to launch themselves into a marriage -- especially when there was no war to necessitate a rushed ceremony on some backwater planet where seclusion and haste necessitated an abbreviated guest list -- the whole surviving squadron turned out to fête them...and their impending spouse.
Having spotted Mara off by herself, Rhys had felt a sudden urge to join the former Imperial assassin -- maybe because her marriage to a twi’lek meant that she knew what it felt like to be out of place sometimes; maybe just out of curiosity. Everyone wanted to know more about Mara Jade...but everyone was afraid to ask. Well, being afraid to open her mouth had never been one of Rhys’s traits...even when sometimes it maybe should be.
“Well, I’m not saying you should be scared,” Rhys continued firmly. “Hell no. I suppose I’m more just surprised that you haven’t just punched all their lights out -- or if you have, you’ve done an astonishing job of avoiding being caught on holocam doing it,” she laughed then leaned in a little closer and dropped her voice conspiratorially. “Frankly, I’m just lucky that Ryloth doesn’t go in for surveillance the way Coruscant does,” she whispered with a wink. “Otherwise I’d really need a lawyer in my life.”
