Reading about the DHS deployment of unidentified officers and unmarked vans to Portland puts my hair on end like nothing has. But at the same time it’s comical. They probably picked out some minivans that were supposed to go to a federal employee with kids, dressed up in their wet dream tough cop costume, and then proceeded to Scooby Doo people off the street.
But that’s what insidious. It’s a slow boil towards fascism and unchecked autocracy. Laughing at the absurdity doesn’t make it less real, it didn’t stop it in the past. And they are not just playing a harmless game of catch and release at the federal courthouse, really. They’re breaking fingers.
