I saw the post of someone wanting Jack to fix the problem of people not reading fanfics…. while I do write fanfics, I don't expect the creator to read them. I understand why writers get tired of feeling like they are in the shadows, but I kinda stand on Jack's side in this… it's not Jack's fault that people don't read stories as much as just liking drawings and memes. sorry, needed to vent a bit after seeing that. you don't need to answer this
Well, I can’t just let you air all of that without knowing that you’re understood, alright? I apologize if I don’t know the full context, or if I cite instances that could’ve happened already, as I am not really a part of the JSE community.
But I understand the sentiment of writers: it is quite tiring to not be seen. As both a writer and an artist, there is a reason why I prefer to draw my stories– in comics– because it’s honestly easier to read.
I, a writer, actually am not an avid reader except for certain fandoms; I am actively trying to read Markiplier Ego-related fanfics right now, and suffice to say, it’s not hard, but it is quite a process since, well, you just see them acted out by essentially someone who seems more like an “acquaintance” than say, a movie star. It is a marvel to see how writers bring these characters to life into comprehensible plots, especially those plot-driven.
I imagine there is a greater, more different feeling for Sean who is essentially seeing himself be narrated and dictated in numerous stories. Especially since he himself seems to have a narrative going as well.
Let’s face it: it’s more tedious to read than look at an art piece. That’s why a lot of people watch movies more than read books (as I’ve seen). It’s also quite hard to fit a lot of fanfics in a video, while an art piece could literally just be displayed upfront.
If there is a “solution” then that would be, to return to the roots of what made the Egos for what it is: sharing ideas.
I do believe that the JSE community’s egos are very well-grounded on sharing concepts. I’ve seen Sean respond to people’s musings, and credit the community for being the one to help him create and integrate them. I can’t remember which ego of his it was where he mentions that the community had wonderful ideas that he had just made canon.
If writers want their works to be recognized, well, why not make their ideas in bulleted lists? Or even better: why not collaborate with artists? I’ve seen Sean go on a reblogging spree. He loves the community and whatever works they make. An artwork with a caption of “from the fanfic _____” could probably catch his eye, lead him and other people into reading one, and probably liking it. It’s a matter of knowing how to, well, market your work for it to be seen, technically speaking.
There is a reason why it’s called “a picture is worth a thousand words”– but I believe that not everything can be conveyed in one look alone. If the viewer gets intrigued by the notion, then you know, the fanfic might be read.
As for getting recognition through Sean: it’s good to remember that Sean is just one man. He’s got a pair of eyes, and really, a singular brain. No matter how many egos he’s going to play, that’s one man whom the community–well, expects is a grand word, but yes– expects to see every work, while producing the content the community wants to see. Something he could definitely do is tell people to read more, but you know. It’s not that easy.
However, if he has said that he values writers, I’m sure that the sentiment could be given value by the writers themselves. Writers need validation too.
To all the writers of JSE, or hell, any community, please know that you are important. It’s hard to just dive into character analyses and just write about it in a full story. It’s hard to make a plot and write it till its conclusion. That’s words and words and words of careful planning and passion, and sometimes it just gets ignored, and I understand. But know that you’re important. Don’t push yourself to create if you’re just seeking for validation; take care of yourself. Create because you want, because you can, because you would.
I’m not telling writers to give up writing just because fanfics aren’t being community-wide recognized, but if the community could, then do it. I’m sure that there are fans of your works and love them. I’m sure there are those who comment or even like them. I’m sure there would be artists who would love to create art for you, and vice versa. You just have to share. You have to encourage.
Sean can’t make people read stories, but I’m sure the community can encourage others to read more of them.
