365 Marvel Villain paper cut-outs - one villain, every day, all year.

March 19th - Diamondback II

The second villain to use the moniker of Diamondback is a fearsome combatant who grew up in a tough neighborhood where she ended up getting involved with dangerous street gangs.  Her natural talents snd skill earned her the attention of The Taskmaster who taught her to better hone her skills.  She took on the name Diamondback and was recruited into The Sidewinder’s criminal syndicate, The Serpent Society.  An early mission with the society entailed a contract to assassinate MODOCK sanctioned by his AIM minions displeased with his failures as a leader.  The assassination was foiled by Captain America.  Diamondback was hugely impressed by the honorable and dashing Captain America; so much so that she ultimately betrayed the society so to assist Cap in thwarting a group of villains’ attempt to secure the powerful Bloodstone Gems.  She has had run-ins with The X-Men, Paladin and The Cat.  She was also a reluctant recruit into Superia’s Femizon forces.  Some time later, Diamondback, along with her former Serpent Society member, Asp and Black Mamba, formed the mercenary group known as Bad Girls Inc.  Diamondback first appeared in the pages of Captain America Vol. 1 #310.

Xi’An went missing and they had a GAY WEDDING when she was kidnapped! I can’t think of a better metaphor to how she’s treated than that!

tbh i do think marjorie liu wrote xi’an well, but absolutely, you’re right, there’s so clearly a lack of interest at marvel to actually tell stories about xi’an!! she’s been around since 1980 and she’s been out as a lesbian for nearly two decades iirc, and yet has never had a relationship with a woman who has a name on-panel. yet in all that time that xi’an has not gotten to ever have an on panel relationship, besides one (1) single panel showing xi’an with an unnamed woman in bed with her in fraction’s uncanny x-men run, somehow writers have found time to develop five different relationships for sam. not to mention that despite the fact that xi’an was introduced 3 years before any of the other new mutants, she has fewer appearances than every single member of that team, with the exception of doug, who was dead for 21 years.

maybe xi’an being on the roster of uncanny next year signals a sea change in how marvel views her character, but after reading how rosenberg wrote her in dead souls, i can’t say i’m terribly optimistic. HOWEVER, i do think that this is a big important moment for x-men fans to make x-men writers and editors hear that xi’an is a character we, as fans, want to see more of!! to demonstrate that lgbt fans will put our buying power behind xi’an as a character in the same way fans have done for bobby drake and sina grace’s iceman. and to make it clear to marvel that establishing characters as lgbt and then trying to avoid acknowledging that those characters’ sexuality is part of their life isn’t going to fly anymore.

my buddy, therealsongbirddiamondback, cued me into this anime version of the Avengers that airs overseas.  The upcoming second season is set to feature Ms. Marvel and The Inhumans.  You can check out the teaser preview at here.
