The kids do/have used the past tense whenever referring to their dad, so him being dead would a lot of make sense. And would be how sh still manages to wear that necklace. On the other hand, if something like alcoholism split the family apart, that could account for the past tense as well...and it’d also add another dramatic/tragic element the storyline. So who knows?
I also had this strange thought that Miguel’s envy over Jack and Becca could be involved somehow? Maybe?
