FNM 2/14/20 - Escape from the Graveyard

What’s up everyone?  It’s been a while since I last posted about my games of Magic.  Last week I went my usual 1-2 and meant to post about it but forgot.  I think I’m going to go back on my previous statement of not posting about FNM because it’s really the only thing I have worth posting about.  Plus this past week went differently.  Instead of going 1-2 I actually went 2-1.  I took fourth overall and got a promo pack with a Blood Crypt in it which was cool.

Pack one my rare was a Gravebreaker Lamia so I grabbed it and tried to build a deck around the Escape mechanic.  Then a few packs later I was passed a Thryx, the Sudden Storm and since it’s been a card I wanted from this set (due to the fact that I’m a storm player) and made blue my second color.  In all I only picked up SEVEN black cards (including the lamia), two of which had escape.  I was one of three players in our eight-person pod who drafted those colors so it’s not surprising I didn’t get more black but I thought I did.

First round I went up against a player who drafted blue and green with a focus on green because she got both a Nylea and a Dryad of Ilysian Grove and I couldn’t compete so I lost.  Second round I went up against a friend of mine named Kyle and that match was where my deck started to shine.  One of the other black cards I drafted was Pharika’s Spawn which made a pretty good combo with my Lamia.  Once I got my Lamia out I used its ability to put the Spawn in my graveyard and cast it the next turn to get rid of my opponent’s troublesome creatures.  We started game three with only one minute left in the round and my opponent just conceded to avoid a tie.

Third round was a mirror match against someone else who drafted the same colors as me and I actually won that match in three games with the same combo so I ended the match with two wins and one loss.  I’m honestly surprised my deck did as well as it did considering how unbalanced my deck was in terms of colors.  If I didn’t get that second round concession the night might have turned out differently but for me a win is a win.  Next week is my birthday (the big 3-0) so I plan to take the night off to celebrate but I ordered a custom playmat which should get here before Friday (the day before my birthday) and once I do I’ll post a picture.  I can’t wait to see how it turned out.  Based on the preview it might turn out a little dark but if it does I plan to get another one and make some improvements of my own.  Hopefully it doesn’t come to that but I still can’t wait to see it.
