Repost from @thesatellitela Old Man Out, Part 2 From the end of 2013 through the middle of 2015 I went to some concerts (Neil Young at the Dolby, Foo Fighters and U2 at the Forum) and some old favorites’ shows (Ian Hunter at the Coach House, Dead Kennedys at the Roxy, Stiff Little Fingers at HOB Anaheim), a grand total of 15 shows over almost two years. Not bad for an old guy but no new bands and no new venues. As I searched for new music in the summer of 2015 I learned that Television was playing two nights at a brand new venue near downtown. I’d seen them at The Whisky in 1977 and “Marquee Moon” remains an all time favorite album, so I got a ticket for the second night. The new venue turned out to be the Teragram Ballroom with its Art Deco interior, three bars, good lighting, and great sound. The room was full, Television was awesome, and I had a great time. It was the local opener, though, who stole the show. Miya Folick took the stage solo, with just an acoustic guitar. She was engaged and engaging, quipping before one song that “I know this is an acoustic but you should hear this song on electric with a lot of fuzz.” Her songs were beautiful, her voice was beautiful, and I was transfixed. So much so that her performance occupied my mind during Television’s set. At home I googled Miya, bought her “Strange Darling” EP from Bandcamp, and fell madly in love. Scouring the internet I found an announcement of her upcoming show at some place called The Satellite in Silver Lake. Two weeks later I was there to see Miya with a full band and got to hear that song on electric with lots of fuzz. So good. After her set I went upstairs and introduced myself as a geezer fan; Miya laughed and said she loves her geezer fans. Now I knew of two more local venues, the Teragram Ballroom and The Satellite, and finally a local musician, Miya Folick, who I vowed to see every chance I got. Not a lot to go on but it turned out to be the trailhead to the LA music scene I’d been looking for. Thank you Television!
