Second Chances

“Well you should, the decisions you make now will be what you need to live with when you are my age. People do not always get second chances.” He had been given a second chance and while he was grateful for it he couldn’t allow his students to think he was the norm.

Pansy had been hauled into the castle after she’d been caught outside roaming the grounds. She’d been kicked out of her parents’ home months ago for having had the audacity to speak out against Potter and for the safety of herself and her Slytherin brethren. Pansy still wasn’t sure how she’d barely managed to scrape together enough to make her way back to Hogwarts. She, of course, hadn’t any concept of the cost of tuition for an 8th year, or how she’d go about asking for scholarships or assistance to get the basic school supplies - but Hogwarts was the only place she could think of to go after the harrowing summer she’d just spent using her feminine wiles and spellwork to survive the streets of wizarding London alone.

“I need to come back to Hogwarts, Professor,” she whispered, having managed to glamour herself back into some semblance of a ghost of the aristocratic pureblooded student she’d once been. “I don’t know where else to go, but I don’t know how to come up with tuition or what I’ll study in order to make something of myself when I leave.”

The operator of the bus must have really bungled something up quite immensely, dropping the young master Black off so far north to be just outside of Loanend, but maybe the weather had something to do with it. Maybe not. Still, wand in hand (though concealed) Remus opened the door of the small cottage to the cold figure darkening his stoop. When the recognition came, his eyes widened and he hurried the younger boy inside. "Regulus, what the hell are you doing here? And where's your bloody jacket? Here," he led him over to the fireplace, down to just embers as snow came through the floo. "Have a seat, yeah? What's happened, why are you here?"

“I can’t believe they made a contract with your parents, hopefully you realize you can’t keep your practice of being a bloodtraitor.” Regulus was not going to let her softness towards the mudbloods and halfbloods ruin his family name. “Don’t worry, we only need to have two sons. Potions can make sure that means we only touch each other twice.”

Lily’s jaw ticked, but it wasn’t like they had much of choice. Her parents had made their wishes true, very true. She was to marry Regulus Black, a perfect pureblood prince who would turn her from her blood traitor ways. Not that she would let him -- after all, if Sirius could escape the burden of being a Black, certainly she could as well. 

“I won’t be having any children with you sons or not. As I’ve already made clear.” And had earned a healthy dose of the Cruciatus curse for her troubles. No, despite her protests, she would do what was required of her.

“Because it’s deep fried! Honestly you’re missing out!”

“Hello, is there something you want miss Granger?” Regulus looked over at her, raising an eyebrow. He didn’t exactly talk too many people, almost everyone he would have once considered a friend were dead or locked up. “If there is please go ahead, I don’t think you want to be seen talking to me. Your friends might think you’re betraying them.”

Hermione bit the inside of her cheek. The matter with which she came to her Potions professor was not a strange one. He was right, though. Harry and Ron were not at all fond of this teacher. Also they would most likely laugh at her.

“Professor, I was wondering whether you know of any good books I can get to prepare for my O.W.L.s in Astronomy?”

“I don’t care, I’m not going to let them hurt you.” Regulus may not like mudbloods but he hated abusers more, so long as they weren’t his parents at least. “I’ll crucio them until they go insane if they do it again.”

“Don’t say things like that! You’re not going to Azkaban because of me.” Lily glared up at him, though it wasn’t a very threatening glare. Truthfully, she didn’t want him to get hurt. He may not like her, but she liked him, at least a bit.
