Congratulations! Please feel free to contact me any time. I'd also be happy to look it over once you've converted it to an article. Be careful about picking something you aren't that interested in; I know someone who did that and it ended badly.

Thank you for this! I’ll probably put it down for a couple days (to take a break and do the RIDICULOUS amount of grading I need to finish before the end of the semester) but I definitely want to have a working article to submit sooner rather than later, because I keep expecting another scholar to publish on this topic given how popular it is.

Right, I definitely don’t plan on doing something I’m not interested in at all. I’d like to go back more toward what I did for my music theory thesis, which was a work I was interested in and intrigued by but not one that I had any strong emotional connection to. I have some ideas right now of what might become my dissertation, but obviously that’s a few years off and my research interests could change majorly before then.

Oh, the disheartened feeling just happens - so much - but getting to the finish line and sticking a fork in it is DIVINE. I agree with tiltedsyllogism (?I believe?) that there can be a defense drop, but it’s manageable too. :)

And I was really sad about being disheartened with this, since Sherlock Holmes is a topic that is so near and dear to my heart and I was just getting so frustrated with it. It will obviously still be floating around my mind as I start trying to publish in journals, but I think my next big research project is going to have to be something I don’t love quite as much to avoid that problem.

CONGRATULATIONS! and here’s the thing not a lot of people will tell you: there may be a a crash in the next couple of days. If that hits, don’t worry too much! but I’m here to talk, if you do find yourself in those post-The-Thing doldrums.

Thank you! I did notice that strange crash with my previous thesis and was incredibly confused by it, but I guess when you spend literally years on one document you do sort of get attached to it. I’m planning to begin the process of turning it into articles very soon, so hopefully that will help avoid that crash this time :) but I will definitely come visit your ask box in case of the doldrums.

I have defended my thesis with valor and emerged victorious! My committee requested very minor changes, so the full document should be finished within the next week or so. They also STRONGLY suggested turning it into a scholarly article or several sooner rather than later, so I guess I know what I'll be doing this summer.
