It’s not so much that it’s new as that it seemed to explode in popularity following the US and UK invading Iraq. 

I think we’ve been stuck with constant war as an inevitability long enough that people have forgotten that OIF was controversial from the start, especially with the US acting almost entirely unilaterally while most of the UN and NATO were like “wait no.” The Republicans acted fast; knowing that about 1/3-1/2 of the country didn’t want to go to war with Iraq, they started whipping up public fears of Vietnam-era assaults on returning soldiers. This is when people started becoming encouraged to show their support for the soldiers -regardless of their feelings about the war- by thanking them for their service, and sticking yellow ribbon “Support Our Troops!” magnets on their cars. Opposition to the war was spun as hatred for the individual members of the military. It was actually really effective, with odd consequences.

This was also when WW2 games were super popular, and a lot of people were getting interested in WW2 history as a result. Meanwhile, there’s the cognitive dissonance in the background of Support Our Troops Even If You Hate the War, and I think a lot of people started subconsciously applying that to Nazi Germany. There was this desire to sift the war criminals out and talk about the Good and Honorable Wehrmacht Soldiers Who Only Fought For Their Country. Even some Waffen-SS members were held up as good guys on the wrong side; hell, I remember a forum member getting banned because he would go on vitriolic tirades against anyone who disparaged Kurt Meyer. Even so, people started getting upset if you collectively referred to German soldiers as Nazis.

So I guess the TL;DR version is during that time period, a lot of people felt a strong need to divorce soldiers from their governments, to find heroes who simply fought For Their Country regardless of whether or not that country’s use of them was justified.

How did you get the idea for your URL? Daniel Trent is my penname / pseudonym / alias, and I’m a man entirely devoid of creativity so that’s my url

Followers: 71 blogs, and i think ive kept up with blocking all the bots so the actual number is probably about 65

Fave star wars species: the ones with faces, but it’s alright if they don’t have faces too

How are you doing today? im alright, i had a good couple of meetings and a lunch paid for by the department so its been a pretty chill day. and ill spend the rest of the day working and relaxing so it should be pretty good. also at lunch i chatted with a coworker who... continues to astound me with her pleasantness.

What color should Sabine’s hair be in the final season of Rebels?: light blonde or light pink. also, who’s sabine?

Tea or coffee or other: coffee, i usually have vanilla latte from a sachet because im not a real coffee drinker. also, coffee makes no difference to my alertness level. i should try drinking seven cups of coffee and then going to sleep.

Are you always cold or always hot?: im always warm and i dont really know why but all my partners and stuff have always liked it because i can give them my jumpers / im supposedly nice to cuddle with

What do you do right before bed?: like, whatever. some nights ill watch netflix, other nights ill play on my phone, or stare at the ceiling and feel the crushing sense of time pressing on me as i feel myself becoming trapped and alone in the void of despair, or some nights ill just go to sleep straight after dinner.

Mango: What is your trademark?I… really don’t know what you mean by trademark. Like, my legacy, or do you just want my signature? I like my signature though (at least the Daniel Trent one). A good example is here, at the bottom right of the drawing.

As for my trademark, I have no idea. I don’t like, brand people when I meet them so…

Passion Fruit: How would you describe your style?Black. That just about sums it up. To elaborate, I usually wear black jeans and a black or grey sports shirt and (if it’s cool enough) a black jacket which I love. If I’m feeling it, I also like wearing suits. If you’re asking about style other than clothing, I have no idea, you’d have to ask Mandy or something.

Banana: Favourite horror movies?I do not watch horror movies, and never plan to. I generally dislike the idea of horror movies because they’re supernatural (and therefore unbelievable), and they usually have jumpscares. I do, however, like The Omen for some reason.

I also love this story written online called Penpal. It’s a very long read, but it’s good throughout and I’ve read it multiple times. I recommend it to anyone who’s got time on their hands.

Pomegranate: When do you feel the most confident?Probably when I’m teaching someone about something I know well. Like, I help some classmates out with one of my courses and it’s a breeze for me, and I also enjoy helping other people out so that makes me feel confident.

I’ve also been feeling confident while I’m painting the miniatures I’ve been doing, I feel like I’m doing pretty well with them.

48. Who is your role model?I’ve never really had role models, and I think particularly not at the moment. I sorta had one a few months ago but that wasn’t quite a role model - just someone I looked up to.

68. Can you draw?Good question! Probably not now, but a few years ago I used to do some digital drawing (on chickensmoothie) which I’m kinda proud of - I was terrible at drawing faces but other than that I was pretty good.

80. What is your biggest pet peeve?I dunno, I get asked this a lot but I don’t know what really bothers me most. It depends on my mood. At the moment, it’s probably when someone worries about something a lot and keeps commenting on it even though they have absolutely no control over it.

94. Favourite lyrics right now?I’m cycling through songs at the moment so I’m not really focusing on any one song, but a little while ago my favourite lyrics were from For Blue Skies by Strays Don’t Sleep:

5.What is your biggest goal?I have like no goals. literally my daily goal is just to get through the day, that’s it. any more than that and I’m clueless.

6. Do you have any pet peeves?yeah a lot, a lot are to do with driving because I’m very particular about stuff while I drive - like people cutting in, not indicating, etc. but also I get annoyed when people (esp my dad) obsess over things that have already happened / get angry at people for mistakes that they’ve made. like, most of the time they’d have learned from that mistake already, and the outcome won’t change and getting angry at them will only make them feel crappy

26.What is your favorite commercial that you’ve ever seen and why?oh my god this is so specific. but okay the first ad that comes to mind is the Australian “reading writing hotline” ad - the old version. it had a really catchy tune and me and my cousins would sing along to it whenever it came on (we were like, 7)
