Often in modern media characters with super hearing are depicted being near crippled by noises being too loud when they first gain their ability, but eventually they become able to handle it without issue.

Ah.

I mean, there’s of course the problem with it, that that’s not how the brain filters. I can see low level noise being filtered out like that, but the thing is, most loud noises that we’re confronted day to day tend to be sudden. Say, a honking car, and those tend to be the sort of stimulus your brain doesn’t filter out because ‘loud sudden noise’ can come with a side order of ‘YOU GONNA DIE’ and if you now broaden perception to cover a wider range you’re going to end up with more noises that ping as ‘significant’ and unless those noises come in a predictive pattern that seems unlikely to happen. Or if it does happen, it would likely render the upsides of the acute hearing useless because if the brain starts filtering out what would be potential warning signs of ‘bad shit about to happen to you’ your survival chances tend to take a nosedive.

And that’s of course not going into the issue of ‘can the human brain even filter that much’ which I just went into in a reblog.
