Dear Readers,
Thank you for joining me as I begin this journey into supporting Trans* rights, causes, issues, and visibility. My name is Jessica and I am a 26 year old Transwoman from Charlotte, NC. I am a Trans activist and began my transition in 2010. I have faced many obstacles and many faces of discrimination. I have felt the sting of not being accepted. I am of Puerto Rican, Cherokee, and Shawnee decent, but I was adopted into a white home around birth. I survived an abusive childhood from one of my biological parent. I am a rape survivor. I am a domestic abuse survivor. I survived being forced into sex work. I have survived my rebirth into the woman that stands in her truth today, proud of all that she has overcome. I am cognizant of Trans issues faced by my Trans brothers and sisters. I will not stand for the injustice faced daily by Trans People of Color. I will not stand for the mistreatment, the slander, the judging, the gossip, the ignorance, the discrimination, the harassment, and the abuse of Trans people in any way. I will be heard and I would like to take this blog and turn it into a way for us all to share our own Trans experience, fear, and pride as a way to increase visibility. Right now, there are more Americans that believe to have seen a ghost than Americans who know a Trans person. Visibility is needed to resolve the issues that we face. Protests are needed to counteract the mistreatment and discrimination and murder that we face. Equal rights are for everyone and we are everyone too!
I am starting the non-profit group, The TSpot, to provide housing, medical care, counseling, job training, and scholarships for homeless and at-risk Trans youth. There currently is a huge need in the Trans population to support and help our Trans brothers and sisters in their time of need. There are more Trans youth on the streets than any other demographic. Many times we are not counted as we are forced to stay in the homeless shelter designated to our birth gender. This has to stop! Our Trans brothers and sisters are often forced into the sex work industry while living on the streets and are often murdered simply for being Trans and living in their truth. This continues the cycle of abuse, poverty, and exploitation of Trans youth all around the world. With your help, we will make an impact on this community.
We must stand with our Trans brothers and sisters of color. Any discrimination within the Trans community must end now! Trans People of Color are murdered at a higher rate than any other group of people. Trans People of Color are denied housing, healthcare, and employment at a higher rate than any other group of people. Trans People of Color are ostracized and dismissed by family member at a higher rate than other Trans individuals. We must stand together in solidarity. We must acknowledge the existence of passing privilege, white privilege, and socioeconomic privilege.
The may not accept us, but they must respect us and treat us with the decency that all humans deserve.
