This book takes place in Detroit and Cha-cha is about the same age as my parents. It was really nice to read a book that was set in my hometown. I recognized my parents, grandparents, cousins, siblings, myself, etc in this novel. It's very relatable. Mostly this book focuses on family politics, family place, dynamics, dysfunction, function and love. Briefly touches on mental illness, addiction, struggle love and codependency. Francis and Viola leave the south during what is now known as The Great Migration and move to Detroit. 12 additional children and many decades later it is 2008, the height of the housing market and job market collapse. The house is now worth a 10th of what is owed and the children are making decisions about the house. The novel bounces between 2008 Detroit and the crisis the family is dealing with and 1944 when Francis and Viola leave the south, Arkansas I think. I loved this book! Told my Papa he needs to read it.
