The Flight of the Crow

Chapter 17

It took nearly an entire day to reach Konoha, entering the familiar gates in the dead of night. Tsunade had managed to ensure their safe passage, entrusting only her most trusted to overwatch their arrival and keep the area secure from prying had smuggled Itachi out of the base that was eerily silent. He hadn't lingered to wonder on it and chose instead to take advantage of it. Suigetsu and Juugo had met up with him, prepared to accompany him back to the village that started all of this. Raidō Namiashi and Genma Shiranui assured the gates were safe, waiting as Kakashi approached with Gai and Yamato.

"So it's really him." Genma mused as he walked over to Kakashi, hands stuffed in pockets. Kakashi nodded, glancing over his shoulder and watching as Juugo and Sasuke hesitantly approached the gates. "Glad he's still with us...still shitty though." Genma hummed, head cocked. Itachi was carefully bundled in Juugo's arms, with Sasuke within an arms reach. Raidō shook his head with a small sigh. Tsunade had already informed him of the situation and it left a sour taste in his mouth. At this point he was just following Genma's motioned for Juugo to follow him towards the hospital.

"Shizune-san is waiting for you at the doors. She has a room set up for him." Juugo nodded, adjusting Itachi and striding forward. Sasuke moved to follow him but Genma was quick to take his arm, stopping him.

"What-" He turned, prepared to argue but Genma shook his head, waving Juugo on.

"The Hokage wishes to speak to you. Itachi's in safe hands. Your friend will stay with him." Sasuke fought the urge to argue with the man, but finally relented, staring after his brother. Juugo hesitated, but Sasuke released a sigh, nodding him to follow Raidō. He glanced over to where Suigetsu stood, arms crossed.

"Suigetsu, follow Juugo." He instructed and the boy offered him a mock salute, teeth showing as he grinned.

"Don't you worry, Sasuke. I'll keep an eye on him." He darted off after Juugo who sighed, shaking his head as the other boy nudged his shoulder. Sasuke allowed Genma to lead him away from the street and towards the Hokage residence. It was late out, and there were no citizens about, allowing a quick passage. Tsunade was waiting for them, looking tired. Naruto was at her side, practically bouncing around as he spotted Sasuke. She waved Sasuke and Kakashi forward, towards her office. Sasuke silently followed after Kakashi and Naruto trailed behind him.

"Genma, watch the door, would you?" She called over her shoulder and Genma offered her a salute, shoulders straightening.

"Yes ma'am."

"Good man." Tsunade smiled, closing the door behind her. When she turned she came face to face with Sasuke who stood, arms crossed and expression a mix between wariness and hope. "Sasuke," The Hokage greeted. "Sit down." She indicated to the chair and the Uchiha reluctantly took it. His eyes followed the woman as she strode to her desk and settled down in her own chair with a sigh. "Naruto's already told me everything. You approached him in the middle of the night?"

"I didn't want to be seen." Sasuke confirmed. The Hokage huffed, amber eyes narrowing.

"This isn't going to be a simple transition, Uchiha. You've certainly made a mess of things, but all things considered, I can work with you, but you have to help me here." She watched the boy closely. "Are you just going to rush off when your brother is fixed?" Naruto quickly glanced towards Sasuke and the boy could feel Kakashi's eyes on him. It was tempting to say he would, but where could he go? Itachi might be healed enough to live, but on the run? Sasuke had to adapt, and as long as he and Itachi could be offered sanctuary, he would at least linger. The threat looming from Madara was too great.

"Can you do anything for him?" Sasuke finally asked, voice stronger than he felt. Tsunade sighed. So he was looking at his options now? She could work with this. She had her files on Itachi from the last time he had been in her care. There was damage that could not be fixed, but it didn't mean he would die. Not after everything it took to bring him back.

She back in his chair and pinching her nose. "Look, there's nothing I can do for his hearing. His eardrums are ruptured and you have his eyes. The fact that he woke up is a miracle. I could offer him something for his pain, but he's not going to come back from this, Sasuke." Her amber eyes fixed on Sasuke who fought to keep composed.

"What about my old eyes? I can give them to him or even his old eyes. I'll give them back to him." Sasuke knew he was practically babbling at this point, but if there was a chance he could help Itachi, he would gladly take it.

"Sasuke-" Naruto began only for Tsunade to wave him down, fixing Sasuke with a hard stare.

"Do you think he would want that? Think Sasuke. You were his priority. He would never want you to do this." Her argument left no room for rebuttal and Sasuke bit down the anger bubbling in his chest.

Kakashi shifted, arms uncrossing as he spoke up. "Danzo's labs were located, along with...several sets of Uchiha eyes," At this he trailed off for a second, hesitant to continue. "Your mothers' and fathers' eyes were among them. Maybe they can go to Itachi." Sasuke blinked, staring at his sensei who shrugged. His parents' eyes for Itachi...

"Yes," He looked from Kakashi to Tsunade, almost pleadingly. "Please, if I can't return his to him, I want to give him this at least." The Hokage pursed her lips thoughtfully. Danzo had one of Fugaku and Mikoto's eyes on his person at his death, but the other set was safely set away. It could very well work...but that also left another set of problems.

"The public won't accept a mass murderer on the streets. Not without a reason." She finally pointed out, watching the Uchiha carefully. Sasuke's dark eyes fixed on her, mouth pulling into a thin line as he realized what this meant.

"So it's my clan's standing or my brother." He concluded and Tsunade slowly nodded, leaning forward on her desk and resting her hands on the worn wooden surface.

"I'm sorry. I know he wanted this to remain a secret but with how everything has turned out, that is not possible."

Sasuke closed his eyes, face pinched as he mulled over this. Naruto watched him closely, hands clasped on his lap. Finally, Sasuke's face smoothed out and he opened his eyes too look back at the Hokage. "Tell them."

The darkness was stifling. Itachi should have been accustomed to it, but it remained something he could not understand. The silence was even more so. It left him in a position far more vulnerable than he had been before. The arms that had carried him were gentle despite their strength. It almost reminded him of Kisame. Sasuke was not with him anymore. Itachi had felt when they escaped Madara, and his brother had remained with him for as long as he could, before vanishing. If Itachi was more alert, he would be able to wonder on that properly.

The arms that had carried him were now nearby. He has been settled on something soft and it left Itachi on edge. This feeling of vulnerability was terrible. He hated it. He should not even be here on this soft thing. He was supposed to be dead. He had fought Sasuke and his eyes were gone. That means that it should be over. Instead, here he was on this soft thing. Hands had reached out to check his vitals and Itachi had remained still. The hands were warm and soft, much like his mother's and he fought not to lean into them. This was a healer, not his mother. The hands accompanying them were equally gentle, but calloused. A fighter as well as a healer.

Fingers traced the bandages around his head and if he quietly cursed the fact that he could hear nothing. What was happening? Where was he? Where had Sasuke gone? Itachi was not used to feeling this lost. It would have been kinder if he had just died. Much better than being this weak and pathetic. Just as he was prepared to shut down in his own misery, familiar hands finally reached him.

"Sasuke." He spoke in a voice he would never hear, hands reaching for those fingers that stroked over his cheek. The bed he must have been settled on, dipped as the hands belonging to his brother pulled a blanket over his shoulders.

'He knows the truth,' A nasty voice in Itachi's head whispered. 'Everything you did was for nothing.' Itachi ignored that voice and simply clung to his brother's hands, unwilling to let go and lose him again.

Sasuke had thought he killed his brother.

He had also learned the truth and was devastated. He had long accepted it though but still deep down mourned what he had done.

He had done his journey and was now back at the village.

He had made other mistakes he was living with as well. Marrying Sakura was one. He was seriously thinking of divorce. He didn't want to only because of Sarada but he would surely go crazy.

He was just now on his way back from the leaf from a mission he had been on.

He felt a strong and familiar chakra nearby and he looked around..he activated his sharingan and saw a figure up ahead.

He widened his eyes..no..it couldn't be..not him.

He ran up to them and was stunned speechless..."itachi?" Sasuke said looking at his brother with his visible eye.

OH man, like, I assume we mean in THIS fandom?

When I started watching this dumb anime back in the day I was like… 13? - and I think I remember shipping all the typical ones, y'know, Gaara/Lee, Kakashi/Iruka, obviously Sasuke/Naruto. But then Itachi showed up and it’s like I looked at him and went ‘IM GOING TO SHIP YOU WITH EVERYONE WHORE’ and basically ruined my life, and his death was right around the time I switched fandoms so picking back up a year and a half ago my first otp back was Itachi/Kisame, which quickly turned into Itachi/Shisui and then somehow I ended up in Itachi/Kakashi hell then i wandered into Kakashi/Tenzou and now apparently I ship Kakashi/Obito.

So um… Yeah. They’re all my babies but those were my firsts.

ShiIta is still like, my ultimate baby.

And wbu friend? I know we’re living in kakaita hell together but who was your first??

1. KakaIta - Kakashi/Itachi I really love them. I really really love them. I remember shipping them as a kid. They would be such a cute calm goals couple I swear. They would have really sweet gentle lounging around dates. And let me just suggest, lazy morning sex. Thank you. Let me not make this a literal essay on why I love this ship. Because I could. I will write this fucking essay. Stop me.

2. ShiIta - Shisui/Itachi Good boys. Such good boys who love each other so much. So close. I’m crying. Fuck- my heart.  3. SasuIta - Sasuke/Itachi ... I actually enjoy an aromantic Sasuke way more than anything else, but I do ship him with Itachi... I also ship him with Juugo. 

4. KisaIta - Kisame/Itachi So... I know what I’m about. My favorite character in every fandom I’m in has a main ship I love, BUT I like to pass them around like fucking hot cakes in any damn ship I can. So to be fair I think I’ll just stop listing /itachi or it’ll be this whole list. Also you may or may not already know how much I support diphallia Kisame. I am here for that, and so is Itachi. 5. NaruGaa - Naruto/Gaara Beautiful. Fucking beautiful. I feel like they really bring beautiful things out in one another. The different ways they would show affection to the other makes me weep.

6. KakaGai - Kakashi/Gai Very sweet. I love them as a brotp and a ship. I struggle with Kakashi ships that aren’t KakaIta though because I always think ok but date Itachi in the back of my head somewhere---;;;

7. SakuIno - Sakura/Ino Ideal ship for both of them in my opinion---!!!

8. NejiTenLee - Neji/Tenten/Rock Lee I know it says otp, but why not an ot3?

So, I have good news! My finals are finished and now that I am no longer up to my eyeballs in classwork, I can write (and RP) once more! I've also somehow latched onto another fandom, so I need to learn how to balance them!

Sinful and forbidden pleasures are like poisoned bread; they may satisfy appetite for the moment, but there is death in them at the end.

It started off as just lust. It was just a way to get off. Something about fucking the enemy was just so...wrong. Kakashi slammed Itachi against the wall, mouth like a fist as it slammed against the raven's. He felt Itachi moan into the kiss, hands moving to grasp at the Copy nin's hair. This was forbidden. This was exactly the sort of thing that nin were taught not to do. The enemy was the forbidden fruit and Kakashi wanted to sink his teeth into it and never let go. 

Yet each time Itachi came, Kakashi accepted the fruit he offered. He had taken Itachi on nearly every surface of his apartment, the kitchen counter, the table, the floor and once even in the shower. He had never however, taken him to his bed. It felt like a line would be crossed if he did so. That it would turn from lust and unspoken truths would come to light.

But through all the rough grunts of 'I hates.' there was a silent whisper of something deeper. Something that neither Kakashi nor Itachi would ever speak out loud, but still filled the room as if they were both shouting it. What would Sasuke think? What would that boy think if he knew what his former sensei was doing with his hated brother in his shitty little apartment? What he had been doing for years now. Kakashi tried not to think of the Uchiha boy when Itachi was with him. It was easier to pretend that way. It was easier to ignore so that when Itachi would appear at his windows looking more beautiful than he had a right to be, Kakashi could bruise him and bite him without guilt.

"Take off your clothes." Were the next words out of his mouth and Itachi obeyed like the good subordinate he had once been. Kakashi lazily removed one glove, followed by the other and tossed them aside, never taking his eyes off of Itachi. Itachi was a gorgeous contrast of pale skin and dark hair, but Kakashi had noticed the changes. After years of analyzing this body, Kakashi noticed how Itachi was slowly losing weight and his skin getting paler with each visit. Worry was at the Copy nin's lips, but he never spoke of them. They shouldn't even be doing this... this is wrong. Adding feelings to the mix only made it worse. He moved his hands beneath pale thighs and hiked Itachi up, grinding the younger man against the wall. Itachi's thighs spread so easily for him; letting Kakashi get as physically close as possible. There was no time and no need for sweet talk and foreplay, both pleased to just shove and push until one of them broke. Kakashi pushed his pants down and shoved into the Uchiha, reveling in the small gasp that was emitted into the night air.

"Senpai..." Itachi's voice whispered in Kakashi's ear and the man shuddered at it, fingers tightening to leave bruises on delicate skin. He wanted Itachi to leave feeling those bruises, to run those lovely fingers of his over each and everyone and know who exactly put them there. His hips thrust forward, burying himself into the Uchiha and he felt the raven's fingernails ding into his back. He was betraying Sasuke, his team, his friends and his village but it didn't matter. Nothing mattered but the man pinned against him, whispering his name like a prayer. Kakashi suddenly stepped back, gripping the Uchiha close. Itachi blinked in confusion, legs wrapping around Kakashi's waist as the man continued to walk backward, pushing open a door with his shoulder.

"Kakashi." Itachi turned his head, fingers gripping at the Copy nin's broad shoulders. Kakashi hummed in response, stepping back until the back of his legs touched his bed. He fell back on the bed, Itachi straddling him and looking so damned perfect that it hurt. Itachi didn't move for a long moment, dark hair long and wild as he gazed down at Kakashi.

"You aren't scared are you?" Kakashi's voice was heavy, watching Itachi's reaction closely. The Uchiha's lips quirked. It was a challenge and Itachi accepted this new challenge with ease. Kakashi's hips shot up and Itachi leaned back, one hand gripping at Kakashi, the other pushing his hair from his face. The grin he offered Kakashi was both a gift and a challenge. Like Itachi, Kakashi never liked to back down. Itachi sank onto Kakashi's length and the game was set.

Itachi pressed his forehead against Kakashi's shoulder, trembling from his orgasm and Kakashi's arm easily moved to pull the Uchiha close, lips pressing against his dark hair. This was intimate in a way they hadn't been before. For all the lewdness and previous activity; this was somehow much deeper. Kakashi's fingers stroked through Itachi's dark locks, brushing strands behind his ear so he could lay light kisses to his neck. This was the part that was dangerous. Not the violent clashing of their bodies or Kakashi roughly spreading the Uchiha on the living room floor. No, this was the part that could break him. The rare times where Itachi lays against him and their touches are gentle and tender.

'I love you.' Was the silent admission in the bedroom. Neither spoke it, up when Kakashi pulled Itachi against him to kiss and the younger accepted it, it was good enough for them.

Itachi left before the sun rose, kissing Kakashi once more. It was a tender goodbye, not the usual nip at his lip. Kakashi smiled in surprise and reached to cup Itachi's cheek. They would go back to their lives as enemies. They would fight on opposing sides with no feelings attached. But for now they kissed, and Kakashi felt as if Itachi was saying his final goodbye, and he was.

It would be two weeks later that the masked man would appear while they were tracking Sasuke. Itachi had said his final goodbye, and from there...Kakashi should have known better.

Something Tender

A shark's lifecycle was riddle with violence. From the moment of conception and through birth all the way to the end. There was no room for weakness. Nature's very own perfect killing machines. Kisame took pride in this knowledge. Kisame was not supposed to care for anyone. He was a weapon. A weapon who could not afford the luxury of allowing themselves to become vulnerable to anyone. Caring about someone meant weakness and weakness meant compromise. The Kiri nin did not compromise and Kisame didn't either.

Until Itachi.

There was no compromise there only solid devotion that had snuck up on Kisame like the plague. He wondered when things had gone from reluctant partners to unwavering loyalty. He wondered what this meant for him.

There were not many things in the world that Kisame was certain of. He could not afford to put his faith in many things. Not with the Akatsuki, not with Pein and certainly not with Madara. And for sometime, he thought Itachi was also included in that list of those he could not put his trust in. Yet the Uchiha surprised him; Kisame was not accustomed the surprises.

Extraction missions tended to be dull. Often the Akatsuki's spies would be killed before they could reach their mark or turned on their employers. It certainly didn't do much for business and Kisame had made a habit of guessing which of the Akatsuki's spies were snitches. He tended to be right when he guessed, able to see the weakness in their eyes.

There was a man who they were supposed to get the information from. He was short. Shorter than Itachi at least and scrawny with big hands that were veiny and nails that were chipped and dirty. He was also incredibly difficult and rude. Not that either Kisame or Itachi were expecting anything less. They had met up with the man to discuss details over the location of weapons that Madara had been interested in. The man was their fence and had a reputation for being difficult. Kisame never had the patience for vague answers and was ready to leave or kill the fence. As expected, he was just as annoying at ever.

"Do you at least have a location for us?" Kisame bit out in annoyance and the man scowled at him, beady eyes watery and frustrated. Same old song and dance. The man-who Kisame had not bothered to learn the name of crossed his arms over his chest.

"You can't expect me to be giving this out for free, do you?" He replied, voice like oil. Itachi nearly sighed and instead fixed the man with an unimpressed stare.

"You are one of the Akatsuki's fences. I would expect you to at least put in the effort." Itachi responded coolly. If the man gave no noteworthy information, they would simply move on. Madara would not be pleased but they would at least be able to continue on their travels. The man turned his gaze to Itachi and looked him up and down.

"There's a lot of people out there who would appreciate these locations." He drawled and Kisame nodded while Itachi simply stared. "And there will be offers that even the Akatsuki might not be able to match."

"So you're saying you would screw the Akatsuki over for a better deal." Kisame concluded while the man shook his head quickly.

"No no not at all. I can give you the details it will just cost extra."

"How much extra?" Itachi asked, knowing Kakuzu would not be thrilled with it. Kisame crossed his arms over his chest and the man stared hard at the Uchiha. "You honestly expect our employers to be happy that you are going back on a deal? I am sure our Leader will not be happy with you."

"I'm sure we can come to an arrangement." The man offered and Kisame narrowed his eyes at the suggestion and Itachi regarded him in disinterest. He did not like the look in the man's eye or what he was saying. It was time to move on now. He looked towards Kisame and nodded to the road. Kisame however had not looked away from the man, fix beady eyes narrowed slightly.

"I'd like to hear what he's offering, Itachi-san." Kisame suggested lightly and Itachi reluctantly looked back towards the man who suddenly looked excited. Itachi nodded for the man to continue.

"You might as well speak quickly. I'm beginning to lose interest in speaking with you." Itachi commented, glancing towards the road. The weather was beginning to turn and Itachi was ready to get moving. The man glanced once more at Kisame who had fixed him with an intense stare as if eager to hear what the fence had to offer. This seemed to give the man confidence because he looked back at Itachi.

"We could at least put that pretty mouth of yours to use. Seeing how you have nothing else to offer." The man replied with a growl and Itachi gave no indication that he even heard him, although he felt Kisame tense at his side.

"We'll be alerting Pein-sama about your inability to actually do your job." Itachi stated, turning away from the man. "You should expect to hear from him soon." Kisame did not budge, still staring at the fence who sneered, obviously annoyed that some kid was disregarding him. Some punk ass kid was looking at him as if he were vermin. Well, that would not do.

"You better run boy. It would be a mighty shame if me or one of my boys decided to come pay you a visit one night." The man's lips were curled back, his teeth gleaming, but Itachi kept walking. Kisame stopped walking, red flashing before his eyes.

"You mind repeating that?" Kisame's voice was rough and terse as if he were trying to keep his temper under control. Itachi turned and looked to him, eyes narrowed as a silent order for him to calm down. The man scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, eyes darting from Kisame and to Itachi as if he felt the tension in the air. He seemed to have realized that he had treaded a little too far and could feel the thickness in the air.

"Look, I didn't mean anything by it." He began, hands coming up in defense. One of his nails was jagged, dirt coating underneath. Kisame thought the dirt suited him quite nicely.

"Oh? Then what did you mean?" Kisame demanded while Itachi quietly called his name. Kisame ignored him however and took a step towards the fence.

"Look, I-" The man sounded almost panicked as he stumbled back, Kisame advanced forward with a slow swagger. It was the hunt before the kill, and Kisame was on the prowl. Some stupid little fish had decided to take a bite at one of Kisame's own...that would not do...that would not do at all. Before Itachi could say anything Kisame had reached the man and Itachi heard the man shriek and a crack before the kiri nin released the man, stepping back as he fell face down onto the ground. Itachi stared at the fence for a long moment.

"We were not suppose to kill him." Itachi quietly stated, staring at Kisame's back. "Leader-sama will not be happy." Kisame did not face him.

"He insulted you." The elder said as if it were the simplest thing in the world, and perhaps for him it was. Itachi shook his head. Kisame's voice was devoid of emotion, as he stated the simple fact. If Itachi were anyone else, he would have squirmed at that eerie tone, instead the Uchiha released a small noise of understanding.

"Kisame, that's not-" He began only for Kisame to finally turn and face him, expression severe.

"He shouldn't have talked about you like that." There was such conviction in his voice and it stunned Itachi. Kisame's eyes were like burning coal, fierce as the studied Itachi. The Uchiha was stunned by the raw emotion in them.

"Kisa-" Itachi began again but his partner cut him off.

"I know...you don't like me killing people and all that shit, but I could hardly let this asshole walk away after what he said. No one talks to you like that and gets to just walk away. I din't care who they are." Itachi stared as Kisame kicked the body over. The kiri nin knelt down and reached for the man's pockets, drawing out several items.

"Thank you." Itachi finally managed and Kisame turned to him, offering him a small smile, that gave him an almost tender expression. No one had defended Itachi like this before and it sent a warm feeling blooming in the Uchiha's chest.

"I have the locations here." Kisame held up the fence's papers. "We can get them back to the hideout." They didn't speak of the incident again, but Kisame lightly nudged the Uchiha as they trekked back down the wooded trail. Itachi shot Kisame a small smile, barely noticeable but leaving Kisame feeling like it was all worth it.
