I saw a post where you mentioned a "true bug," which indicates the existence of a "false bug." Please oh please can you tell me the difference? I could Google it, I know, but I love your blog and want to hear it from you.

True bugs are only those in the order Hemiptera. That includes things like stink bugs, cicadas, assassin bugs, aphids, planthoppers, etc. There are a lot of them, and they are notable for their tube-like sucking mouthparts. The general term "bug," on the other hand, is a colloquial term for, usually, any little land-dwelling invertebrate. Or sometimes aquatic. It doesn't really mean much. You can call anything a bug if you want. I would say there are no false bugs except maybe if a vertebrate were mimicking an invertebrate? Those snakes that have spider-like lures on their tails come to mind.
