5 and 9 for the End Of Year Fic-Writer ask meme please <3

Oh boy! Thanks for indulging me and doing this meme!

5. Which of your fics do you wish was more successful?

Honestly, given how few (well, for me) fics I actually posted this year (six, and also one fanmix) I have to say I'm pretty happy with the reception all of them have gotten. I feel like if I'm not posting fic, people will forget about me -- and maybe that's not rational, sure, but in fandom where people like to Make Creative Stuff, sometimes it's hard to feel like you have something to offer to others if you're not turning up with, IDK, a new fic every month. So honestly I'm just glad people are reading them and liking them, and my old fic as well, even though I'm not currently posting anything.

(The amount of unposted Steve/Tony fic I am currently sitting on is now probably about 400,000 to 500,000 words. It's not all ready to go, and some of it I'm sitting on for various holiday exchange things and other gifts, but there's probably about that much of it. I know, it's a little ridiculous.)

9. If you could go back and change something about one of the fics you wrote this year, what would it be?

I'm starting to feel like some of my longer fic is... overwritten, stylistically. So I'm sort of torn between "I know if I were writing professionally people would tell me to cut that out and they'd be right" and "this is fandom and writing fanfiction makes me happy and fanfiction is probably one of the few genres where I can show up and be like 'this chapter is 30,000 words and consists of two characters in one room having a conversation' and there will be at least a few people who will be like 'yes, please, give me that.'" So there's... a balance there but at this point I'm just like "whatever, I'm having fun."

If you are still doing director's commentary, please do one for "A Uniform Velocity from the Cradle to the Grave". It's one of my all-time favorites!

I'm still going! I'm glad you like this one! I didn't think it was anyone's favorite!

This one was for a bingo square that was "time travel to the future," and I am 95% sure the title was a quote from HG Wells' The Time Machine.

I feel like a more expected interpretation of the square might have been present-day characters traveling into an invented future -- like "hey, check it out, in the future we seem to be dating!" -- but I also feel like comics has enough canon that there is room to travel within it to futures that already exist, and Ults stuck out to me here for a couple reasons. One is that Ults has a very definite beginning and an end, and the other is that Ults Steve strikes me as the kind of guy, unlike 616 Steve, who gets to the future and really wants to go home. He warms up to it eventually (unlike, uh, MCU Steve) but he doesn't seem at all happy the first couple years. His family's dead and his fiancee married his best friend.

So I thought, well, Ults Steve wants to go home, so instead I will send him on a visit to post-Cataclysm Tony.

Because Tony after Steve's death in Cataclysm is really pretty fucked up. He disbands the Ultimates. 616 Tony didn't do that after Steve's death, even. But Ults Tony gives a eulogy and is just like, "nope, I'm out," and grabs another drink. And so I thought, also, that it would be really nice to give him a Steve for a bit, even one he couldn't keep -- this is sort of like the plot of Avengers/Invaders but in Ults.

And then, you know, Steve would also get a chance to find out that Tony loves him and maybe there are things for him he will like in this time after all.

Plus, I feel like, even though a lot of Marvel fic is set in NYC, nobody makes fun of the Capital District as much as they should. It's right there and very mockable! I apologize to anyone living in Schenectady but I felt like there was a great untapped potential for the cultural tradition of poking fun at Schenectady.
