18+ 616 Steve/Tony Discord Book Club: Nomad
In honor of our @niche616exchanges and its current theme Don't Call Me Captain, You Gave Me A Home will spend this summer (re)-running various Captain America Book Clubs that showcase Steve Rogers not being Captain America. And we're starting with a classic: Nomad!
Yes, we're reading the famed 1974 arc by Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema once again. We are reading Cap v1 #176-183 (and Avengers v1 #131 for the Nomad cameo) but this is all spinning out of the events of Secret Empire (original flavor) in which Steve watches Richard Nixon betray the entire country and then commit suicide -- if you want to read all of that, you can start with Cap #169.
But we know you're really here for this guy:
Watch him sulk! Watch him sew his own costume! Watch him sulk more!
And the best thing about his costume? Tony likes it!
Come join us on You Gave Me A Home, an 18+ comics Steve/Tony Discord server! We are still located at discord.gg/stevetony.
Bookriot 100 Must-Read Sci-Fi Fantasy Novels By Female Authors Bookriot 100 Must-Read Sci-Fi Fantasy Novels By Female Authors
ok let's do another one! this time we have Bookriot's 100 sci-fi fantasy novels by female authors.
just to pre-empt a few possible objections to the list, it was published in 2016 and:
JK Rowling's public transphobia downward spiral began in 2018.
All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells) was published in 2017 and Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir) was published in 2019.
The Fifth Season (NK Jemisin) was published in 2015 & given that the editor included a different NK Jemisin I presume Fifth Season simply hadn't hit all-time classic status yet.
The editor stated upfront that they included 1 book per author.
I have no idea what We Have Always Lived in the Castle (Shirley Jackson) is doing there given that it categorically is not SFF.
How many of Bookriot's 100 sci-fi fantasy novels by female authors have you read?

Otoh, there are quite a few by authors on the list I've read, but not the specific book listed. And a few I started, but hated so didn't finish.
How thoughtful

Steve Rogers’ Pre-Serum Ailments: Comics Edition
So as anyone who is trying to write pre-serum Steve Rogers probably already knows, the list of conditions that Steve actually suffers from differs from canon to canon, and also frustratingly differs in specificity. I feel like MCU writers have the easiest time of it, as MCU has that actual list of Steve’s ailments. (You do have to explain why Steve is several inches taller after the serum; as far as I am aware, in every comics canon Steve is 6′2″ both before and after the serum, although this is not necessarily 100% consistent in comics, especially comics from after the MCU started. Because comics.)
Ults, like 616, gives us a Beanpole Steve, and while it never specifies what keeps Steve from enlisting, we see in Ultimate Origins that he seems to be the most physically disabled of all the Steves; he has a cane and walks with a limp:
And then there’s 616. And the thing about 616 is that it’s really hard to find an origin story retelling that’s clear about what Steve’s pre-serum physical problems are. But now I have an answer! Sort of! I mean, it’s a retelling, so it’s as ambiguously canon as all the other retellings of origin stories, but if you want some actual Things That Are Wrong With Steve to put in your fanfic, there’s a list of them right here in Mythos: Captain America when Steve tries to enlist:
We’re told he has fallen arches, asthma, and he’s under one hundred pounds. So if you’re looking for some conditions to give 616 Steve, there you go.
The really dismaying thing about the last item on the list is that I’m pretty sure we’re still dealing with Beanpole Steve – throughout the pre-serum portions of the comic he seems to be pretty much the same height as everyone around him and even taller than some of them – so absent any other data, I’m assuming that per 616 canon he’s still 6′2″. (Rebirth in this comic also doesn’t mention any height gain, which would suggest he keeps his current height.)
And the problem with that is that we know exactly how much he weighs before the serum, because the comic also tells us that.
He’s 95 pounds.
So, uh, yeah. 616 Steve was apparently really, really, REALLY underweight before the serum. And he had asthma and flat feet, but… he weighed NINETY-FIVE POUNDS. At 6′2″.
Steve, buddy, I hope that now the Avengers feed you all the food you could ever want.
Since this is getting reblogs, I feel like I should point out that -- in the years since I first made this post -- we now have a canonical list of 616 Steve's ailments, from JMS' Cap run, issue #4:
Do with this information what you will.
It doesn't match completely with the MCU list(s) -- because, yeah, there are multiple lists -- but a lot of it is similar. As far as I can tell, this is a proper subset of all the MCU lists; like, unless I've missed something, I think everything on here is on one of the MCU lists somewhere, but not all of it is on exactly one MCU list.
You never know what crossover hits you around the corner
For example Marvel and Barrayar
not asking this to judge anyone, just curious
off the top of your head can you name a current mlb player besides shohei ohtani?
yes, i could rattle off a whole bunch

Nothing deeper behind this drawing. I just felt like drawing something early Avengers inspired.

I just want to thank everyone for sending me asks about comics canon lately and it is really sweet of you all and I appreciate it a lot but also I am Very Tired and have Not Much Brain lately so this may take me a long time to get to. I am very bad at correspondence these days. But I do appreciate being asked!
readcomicsonline getting nuked is bad for all the obvious reasons but also its insane considering those artists/writers confessions that they get sent pages with the readcomicsonline banner at the bottom bc dc and marvel dont have any kind of internal reference or register for most shit. shooting themselves in the dick

baseball is actually not a sport it’s just a documentary of human nature and how we battle boredom. the stuff these teams get up to while they’re waiting their turn.
and it’s hilarious when they pull pranks on each other, like attaching things to other people’s caps:
or the beloved hot foot prank:
or when they decided to put a guy’s pants over his head and make it seem like he was walking on his hands:
or when they opposing pitchers took turns playing tic tac toe every time they got on the mound:
i take back everything bad i've ever said about baseball these boys can fucking Post
Sometimes you have to entertain yourself out in the field too, like the time Victor Robles made friends with a praying mantis.
and some college baseball shenanigans
It’s fun to use contractions inappropriately, but it’s hard to explain why that’s
thats a common interest we've
Yeah, but people get annoyed by it, like when you throw soda cans in the trash can’t the recycle bin
