The Newly Single : 21/05/11
The Newly Single - 21st May 2011
Hello! It’s Dan, filling in for the very busy Mr. Croker who’s on revision duty for the next few weeks. Don’t worry though; it’s not as if it’s the end of the world or anything... WAIT A BLOODY MINUTE, it actually could be if you’re to believe Mr. Harold Camping, the Californian preacher. Even if the worst comes to the worst and the absolute mental is correct in his predictions, grab a cuppa, put on that 1940s style gas mask your nan left you, shut all doors and windows and join me in previewing the best (and worst) the newest single releases – with a bit of an apocalyptic theme.
Single of the Week: Young the Giant – My Body
"My Body," Young the Giant by Mashable
This week’s saviour from the impending end of the world comes from those brilliant lads, Young the Giant. With their latest release, My Body, you’re not just getting a hard punching, drum-laden indie release to just be replaced by the next skinny-jean wearing hipster outfit to come out of any old place. No, you’re also getting a bloody awesome pop song which has pretty much, everything. (Note: no boobs in the video, I can live without that I suppose). From the strikingly attractive guitar riffs to that stupidly addictive chorus, you’d be forgiven for forgetting all about that that big-ass nuclear explosion going on outside. The laid-back swagger of Young the Giant will really help you relax and enjoy your last remaining minutes before the nuclear fallout kicks in. Swish!
Reasons to have faith in humanity:
Cloud Control – This Is What I Said
This NEARLY made Single of the Week but due to the overly delightful and chirpy nature it wouldn’t go down well when you’re running away from your household appliances when they turn on you. On the off chance your toaster isn’t teaming up with your microwave then this is a bit of absolute bliss, really yummy vocals on top of a smooth bass and guitar combo – ooft.

CockNBullKid – Asthma Attack
This week’s TNS points to a huge amount of variety and originality which makes it a bit of a shitter when you think you’re probably going to die today. Anita Blay aka CocknBullKid is something totally unique, her radiant voice is joined with a very pop and soul backing and finished off with a very solid chorus – this girl is going places (unless we die, horribly).
Villagers – The Pact (I’ll Be Your Forever)
If there was a way to save the world through the form of vocals, Villagers frontman Conor would be up there (along with Meatloaf and Rebecca Black) in my crew to take down the evil that threatens the world. The Pact is a very heart-felt tribute to someone in love; O’Brien’s vocals send you into a trance-like state with an utterly gorgeous piano solo to finish off the track, you could probably listen to this song forever if you had to.
Gruff Rhys – Honey All Over
The Super Furry Animals man oozes his way onto the list with his very classic and very British sound – and Christ, in the event of total destruction of the world, it’s the British spirit we need. Whilst the Yanks are kicking off, we’ll be sipping on tea and complaining about how that mushroom cloud is ruining the weather. Honey All Over is a tasty offering from Gruff and feels like a lovely mashup of the Kinks and maybe even the Beatles.
Mogwai – San Pedro
Sneaking onto the list is the latest offering from the Glasgow post-rock outfit, Mogwai. This is maybe not to everyone’s tastes but the 3 minute instrumental is chock-full of technical guitar riffs and full on energy it’s quite easy to think of it as a backdrop to a post apocalyptic scene in a film.

Tracks to be thankful for the end of the world:
Patrick Wolf – House
I like Patrick Wolf, he seems like a nice bloke and has a lovely voice. But, when the shit hits the fan and I need to defend a zombie horde, he’s not first on my list. This is how I feel with his latest release, ‘House’; it’s lovely and chirpy but can it wield a fuck-off shotgun? Probably not. I’m sorry Patrick but you’ll be the first to go...

Blondie – Mother
Oh hey Debbie Harry! How’s it going? It has been a while but I’m afraid your latest offering doesn’t get anywhere near your older stuff so I’m offering you to the alien invaders as a gift. As cute and as beautiful and as historic Blondie are, their latest comeback seems disjointed and outdated. It got rather painful so I chose to transport back to 1979.
Cass McCombs – Country Line
Despite the amount of talent this bloke holds, Country Line just left me feeling a tad disappointed and frustrated. No doubt this guy can wield a shotgun even possibly an AK47 but he would do it in the slowest way possible and before you know it, we’re all zombie meat. I’m sorry Cass but the lack of direction in this just annoyed me despite how great his 70s-style vocals are.

Wiz Khalifa – Roll Up
Bloke who gave us Black and Yellow in wanting to be beaten black and blue shocker. Oh Wiz, this lacks all the annoying tendencies that made the last release such a hit between the tribal-tattooed orange monsters who grace Oceana. When the rapture comes, God definitely won’t be ‘rolling up’ to save you.
