Epilogue
The Sun was dipping over the garden, the sky was streaked with pinks, reds and deep hues of purple. It had been a full day of laughter and joy, as the estate's families had all returned to celebrate Julia's 98th Birthday. That morning Geralt had bathed his beloved in kisses and cuddles before helping her bathe. She had dressed in her favourite dress the Royal teal satin dress that she had cherished for many years, it was slightly too big for her now thinning frame but it still lit up her face whenever she wore it.
Geralt had settled her in her garden on a special day bed that Tobias had made for her so that she could enjoy the sunshine and watch the children play. Today there were many children running around the garden playing hid and seek and running underfoot of the Adults who were eagerly catching up after some time apart. Jaskier sat to their right playing beautiful tunes on his lute. Jaskier finished his song his face wrinkled which reflected in the warble of his voice as he spoke to Julia "Ahh the good old days, adventures and romance, monsters and money" Geralt growled low as Julia laughed "You didn't go on any of those adventures Jask you were too busy playing with the children"
Laughter rang out from her lips as Jaskier pouted and then smiled a devious smile as he began to strum "Toss a Coin...." Even before he could finish the sentence Geralt gave him a look that silenced the old man. "No fair Geralt, I need to revel in my youth. You still look that same as you did when we first met and Julia and I, well we've seen better days." Putting a soft wrinkled hand on Jaskier arm Julia smiled and said "It's ok Jask, why don't you play me Caleb's favourite lullaby. I always loved that song" a gentle sweet smile formed on Jaskier's face as he began to play a gentle lullaby that almost succeeded in taking Julia away into slumber.
As the morning's festivities moved into lunch and then Mid-afternoon a large cake was bought out for Julia. Large enough to accommodate the myriad of candles adorning the top, she asked the children to gather around and help her blow them out. Geralt loved how much she enjoyed her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He knew however that today she would not have had the breath to blow out one candle let alone 98. He sat behind her as she lay comfortably against his chest, their familiar position as the procession of Gifts were paraded before her. First came Tobias and Renee who both looked remarkably young for being in their late 60's easily mistaken for being in there 40's. Followed by Wilfred and his family and their children and Amelia and her family and their children.
As they moved forward Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert and Cohen bowed low before her Julia the only one looking even remotely as old as Julia was now was Vesemir his frame slightly bent and eyes watery but he looked in his mid 80's rather than the possible 600yrs that he was. The brothers blew her a kiss each and they moved along to allow Visenna and Yennefer a chance to present there good wishes presenting the only Gift Julia would agree to accept today a small bottle of her favourite Honeysuckle oil.
As each servant presented before her Julia remembered her cherished ones those who had passed on ahead of her Nessie her beloved cook who had become a cherished friend. Ruth and Hannah who had died in an outbreak of the pox 20 years earlier along with Jolnar and Petra. She had done all she could for them and it still it haunted her knowing she could not save them.
As the last couple walked near, she recognised both the beautiful lady standing before her and her handsome son standing taller than his father broad shoulders carrying their youngest child. No longer a teenage girl but a regale Queen, Cirilla had rightfully taken her place as the Queen of Cintra along with her husband Caleb beside her. She and her children now ruled the lands of Cintra and had enjoyed peace for many years. Ciri and Caleb kneeled before Julia and took her wrinkled hands in theirs. There eye's meeting, Ciri's full of unshed tears as she kissed Julia on her hand whispering "Happy Birthday Mother, I love you" handing their youngest to Jasker who was happy to cuddle with his nephew Caleb leaned forward and embraced his mother. His deep baritone voice whispered "You're looking well today mum, has dad been looking after you?" the cheeky glint in his eye speaking to how well he knows his parents the even after all these years their passion for each other had never wavered.
Now Geralt had Julia wrapped up in his arms in their favourite place, a blanket sitting over their bodies snuggling on the day bed in the healing rooms looking out over the place where so much love and warmth was met today. As the stars began appearing Geralt whispered to Julia "did you enjoy today my love?" he could hear her gentle soft breathing as she nestled further into his arms "Yes, it was so good to see everyone. This place seems so quiet when they are off living their lives" Geralt hummed in agreement as he ran his fingers through her hair now just as white as his own. They stayed that way for quite some time just enjoying the stars and each other's warmth until Geralt felt something change. It was an imperceptible shift in the way Julia was breathing he looked down at her, as their eyes met. Her pale now milky blue eyes smiled as she said "Take care of them my love" and with that she breathed one last breath and was gone.
He had known it was coming, they had prepared for this moment since Julia had started to feel her strength decline, but it didn't make the feeling of loss any less. Rather than moving Geralt relaxed into the day bed content to hold his beloved in his arms for just one more night.
Visenna placed a hand on Geralt's shoulder, she had found him sitting on the day bed looking out at the stars. Thankfully the family had been still in town allowing for a funeral to take place before they all went their separate ways.
At the contact of her hand on his shoulder she sat as he turned, and her son curled into her sobbing. No matter how much they had planned for this, talked about this she knew he would feel the grief and loss for many years to come. She was just glad she could be here to comfort him, to walk it thought with him. She knew he would be ok, that the love of their large family would help him remember the good times. To remember the love that Julia had shown to so many, and to celebrate the life that they had together. Still right now it was raw, and he needed to be allowed to grief so she did what she could she held her son and let him cry.
It had been a few months since Julia had passed and Geralt was only just beginning to start to feel more that just the loss. He had woken in his empty bed his arms aching to hold her again. Just wanting to feel close to her he went out to the stables and saddled Roach. The chestnut mare had been a present to him from Julia after Rose had passed away. They had clicked straight away, and roach had been a faithful companion. Today he knew where he needed to go, to their special place. Getting into the saddle he urged Roach into a gallop as they flew over the hills, past the Witcher keep that now rose up to the east of the main dwelling, past the orchards and finally to the river. He had pushed Roach fast needing to feel the wind and adrenaline through his veins.
Here, he found their favourite place, the watering hole had not changed too much since that day he had proposed to her. The trees were still strong and created the sound of waves as the wind rustled the leaves. The birds had come and gone, and now new generations occupied their branches. Even the ant's nests continued their cycle completely unperturbed by the destruction of their colony all those years ago when he had landed his beloved directly on top of their home.
Sitting down on the same bank he shut his eyes, picturing her face he spoke "We miss you Julia, I miss you. Your smile and your hugs. I miss your constant prattle about the grandchildren, and your worry about their safety. I wish you could have lived as long as I did, and that I wouldn't have to live without you" He opened his eyes looking at the water, he realised the biggest thing he missed was the peace that she exuded. Even in her worry she was peaceful.
As he sat a voice seemed to carry on the wind from long ago, her voice as it recited "The lord is my Shepard I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." As the words swirled around his mind a peace settled in his heart. It wasn't just Julia that he had missed is was the presence of her unnamed God that seemed to follow her wherever she was that he missed.
Speaking to the wind his deep voice carrying around the river he said "I know you, I watched you work through Julia's hand, her compassion, her heart for her family for her patients for me. I saw you work your miracle to bring us the child she so longed to have. If she's with you I want to be there too. I have never believed in higher beings, help me find you. I want to know you like she did" With that a peace greater than he had ever felt before wrapped itself around his heart. In that moment he knew without a shadow of doubt that he would continue to protect and love the family he had on this earth, and that he would one day see Julia again. Filled with a renewed strength and peace he went to Roach mounted and set off for home.

Chapter 4
4 weeks had past and the household of Julia of Wolnosci was full of excitement. Julia had begun to feel like she was getting closer to finding a place of peace. Her clients were beginning to see the changes in her, causing her clinic to begin to make a name for itself again. The estate was also thriving, each of the new servants were adding there skills to the benefit of the family.
Geralt had begun to feel like he was gaining his strength back. He had been working hard with his sword training and was finding working with the horses very therapeutic. Each day Julia continued to work with him in the spring, and using remedial massage to help aid his recovery after each training session. Julia was sure he was well on the way to a full recovery, there were still some scars that were healing but they would fade in time.
Every evening Geralt would come and visit Julia in her library. Some nights the room would be silent as they were both lost in the worlds painted in their books. Some nights the room would be filled with animated discussion debating monsters, politics, and everything in between . The surprising part for Julia was that a real bond of trust and friendship was growing between them. Many night the servants could hear as they went about their chores, deep discussion and laughter coming from the library.
Today there was an air of expectation on the minds of every member of the estate as preparations for a grand wedding celebration were in full swing. Tobias and Renee would be man and wife in just under 3 hours, followed by a huge celebration. The first one to be held at the estate since Wilfred had died. Julia once again looked at the great room, this time the colours were of soft pinks, rose gold and white, Renee's favourite colours. The columns were wrapped with green Ivy and white roses, the tables adorned with pink silk, white and pink roses, rose gold goblets and rose gold and white crockery.
Julia narrowed her eyes and gazed around the room critically looking for anything that was out of place. Just one last look, although knew she didn't really need to. She knew that it had been lovingly done by the servants for their favourite couple, and as she suspected it was perfect. Julia was so grateful for Renee; she had come to be invaluable at the estate. She had refused to return to her family until yesterday. Only leaving to full fill the tradition of her Husband coming to claim her before the ceremony. Not only had she endeared herself to the servants, but she had become a great friend to Julia. They shared many similar passions, hospitality, reading, and Renee had even shared a longing to learn the art of healing from Julia. The unnamed God surely had a hand in bringing Renee to her family, not only for Tobias, but for her as well.
As the sun hit the room a rainbow danced across the wall reflecting off one of the crystal vases. It was only a small rainbow but it was enough to trigger a wall of sadness in Julia, as if a cloud had moved over the sun, suffocating her joy making her heart ache. Her mind remembering the last party she and Wilfred had shared with the village. He should be here. Wilfred would have loved this; He would have loved seeing Tobias married to such a beautiful bride. Allowing herself to dwell on the grief of one more thing that had been stolen from them, Julia began to silently weep.
Geralt was heading to the kitchen to get some apples, his favorite food to give as treats to the horses. As he passed the great room he spotted Julia standing in the middle of the explosion of flowers and finery. Something caught at his heart as he noticed Julia was weeping. Without a thought he quickly moved into the room, and without a word pulled her into his arms. Julia stiffened for just a moment then melted into his chest sobbing as Geralt held her tighter.
After a few minutes her sobs turned into small hiccups, and then she calmed. They stood in each others embrace for what seemed a lifetime. Geralt did not want to let her go, he was surprisingly enjoying the feel of her body against his. Julia also felt surprised, her body enveloped by the warmth of his body and security she felt in his arms. Eventually, Julia pulled back and looked up into his now softened eyes "Thank you" she whispered unsure of what she was feeling she stepped away.
Geralt felt the loss of her body. An ache he had not felt for a very long time spreading through his chest caused him to want more. Silently he reached a hand out to brushed a stray tear from her face, before saying with a low whisper "will you be ok? I sense today might be hard for you." Julia overwhelmed by the compassion this man was showing her, and amazing that he had read her emotions so accurately stood silent. "Mistress?" Tobias stood at the door a bunch of flowers in the crook of his arm. His words broke the spell over Julia, stepping away from Geralt she turned to Tobias answer. "yes my boy?"
Tobias had been nervously pacing the gardens, his task was to make the perfect bouquet to present his bride. This evening when he went to claim her from her father, it would he his gift to her. He had found a beautiful array of her favourite flowers, baby's breath, gardenias, and roses in pink and white. Their beautiful aroma's filling his nostrils, all that was left was to find something special to bind them together. Julia would have just the right touch to make it perfect had been his thought as he strode towards the house. Moving down the corridor, he heard the sound of Geralt's voice coming from the grand room, and on inspection had seen him hovering over Julia who looked like she had been crying.
"Mistress?," he voiced with concern, Julia turned away from Geralt looking at him and replied with a soft voice, "yes my boy?" that endearment never grew old filling him with a familiar warmth. Not sure of what had transpired he entered the room intent of protecting her. "are you ok?" he looked at Geralt who now looked at him with a stony stare. "yes, Tobias I'm ok, I just had a sad moment and Geralt came to my aid. All is well now." Julia wondered at the change in Geralt's face the softness had disappeared replaced with a hard frown, but she decided to ask him about it later. For now, her faithful servant, her Son, had an arm full of flowers, and if he was seeking her out it could mean only one thing, he needed her help.
Tobias sat tall on his horse; he was dressed in the finest ivory silk suit his dark brown hair curled atop his head. In his arms, the bouquet of flowers sat now tied together with an ivory ribbon with two crystals hanging from the ends. Even though it was a cold night Tobias was oblivious to it, his body full of nervous energy right now. All that was on his mind as he kicked his mare into a gallop was that he was going to fetch his bride.
Standing at the doorway to her house Renee stood ready, she too was adorned in a beautiful ivory silk dress that was edged with rose gold satin. Her headdress dripped with crystals across her forehead securing the long shear Vale that covered her face and hair. She held her lantern up peering into the distance, not knowing the hour that Tobias would come as was custom but hoping with nervous expectation that it would not be too much longer.
Her feet tapped the earth in an expectant rhythm, her mind filled with thoughts of the night to come when she felt an soft hand on her arm. Her mother's smile calmed her beating heart as she heard her whisper, "Peace my child. The waiting, the giving and the sharing will all be over in the blink of an eye. So cherish each moment. The waiting is important, there will be many times in your life when you will be waiting for him to return, learn to be content in the waiting." She knew her mother was true, the life of a merchants wife was filled with waiting.
She could hear her father chuckle beside her mother "listen to your mother my daughter, she speaks wisdom from experience." He drew her mother into his arms and kissed her cheek, the love between them was tangible and she hoped that when she and Tobias were their age they would still cherish each other in the same way. Together they waited enjoying the peace, it was her parents who would hand Renee to her betrothed tonight, signifying their agreement of the joining of the two in marriage.
As Tobias approached the city he slowed his horse to a walk. His heart hammered in his chest as he began to see the streets lined with their friends and family. Each holding a lantern to light the way, he smiled at each one until he could see her. Even from a distance she stood out from the rest. There she was holding her lamp a symbol of the love she had for him, it glow illuminating her satin gown creating a vision the brought him to tears. His beloved was waiting for him.
He dismounted and walked to her father and kneeling at his feet, lowered his head and asked "I have come to humble myself before you and your wife. I love your daughter, and ask that you give us your blessing to become husband and wife" He felt a hand reach under his chin and lift his face up, so he could see her father's eyes shinning with tear as he gazed at him replying. "Tobias of the house of Wilfred and Julia of Wolnosci, we have watched the way you care for our daughter. We have seen your character as you deal fairly in the marketplace, and we have witnessed your compassion and loyalty to your mistress, and to the people of this town. Yes, we gladly give our blessing to you and our precious daughter. We welcome you as our Son" helping Tobias to his feet Renee's father brought him to face Renee. "Daughter, do you take this man to be your husband. To love him, and honour him no matter what life's difficulties bring to your house?"
Renee peered up at Tobias through her vale, she could see his handsome face staring at her with a soft look of love, and tears shining in his eyes. She had no doubt in her mind that she would love this man for the rest of her life. So with a strong voice, she said "yes". At this, the street erupted with celebration as Tobias lifted her vale and kissed her sweetly on the lips. Releasing Tobias from the kiss Renee turned and hugged her Mother and Father, as did Tobias then together they walked to his horse. Tobias lifted her into the saddle and jumped up behind her. Together with the rest of their family and friends began a procession back to the estate.
Julia shivered as she stood at the archway to the estate. The road to the house was lined with the servant's, lanterns in hand. Standing in place of Tobias's mother it was her job to accept and welcome the bride and groom to her estate. She had spent the evening with Hannah and Ruth "getting pretty" as Wilfred had called it. She wore a lavender silk dress adorned with crystals that caught the lantern light. Her hair, curled, was half up and half down covering her shoulders with a ring of crystals in her hair. She knew this night would be a wonderful celebration, and she would be happy for this beautiful couple, but there was still an element of sadness.
As she shivered again, Julia felt a warm hand place a shawl over her shoulders. Looking up she found herself lost in a warm gaze of amber-yellow eyes looking down at her. The softness she saw in his eyes caused a quivering in her stomach. An awareness that this man was becoming more to her than she was ready to accept. She shifted her eyes as the intensity of his gaze was becoming unnerving moving to his body. She could see he had washed and his white hair was pulled up into a bun at the back of his neck making him look even taller than his 6ft 1inch height. He was dressed in a simple black outfit that befitted his station and made his silver medallion of a wolf even more prominent on his large chest.
Geralt sensing her discomfort leant down to her ear so only she could hear, "I can leave if you want, but I would prefer to stay by your side tonight. One because I sense you need it, and two I am not great in crowds and would prefer to be near someone I know." Julia felt it took a lot for Geralt to admit this, and realised she was actually comforted by his close presence. Returning his quiet statement with her own whisper "No, don't go, I would be happy for your escort tonight. Thank you for the shawl, I didn't realise how cold it was."
Emboldened by her words Geralt wrapped one arm around Julia pulling her into his side, a soft smile forming on his lips as he teased, "it's even warmer here." Before she had time to protest, she heard the sound of an army of people singing and laughing, she looked into the distance seeing an ocean of glowing lanterns following a lone horse with its two riders. Stepping out from his warmth Julia walked forward in anticipation of greeting her Son and his Bride.
Julia walked to Tobias as they dismounted, her heart bursting with joy as she spoke "Son of my house, I welcome you and your bride to this estate, I pray blessings on this union" Lowering her head as she took each of their hands, she prayed "to the unnamed God, we ask you bring many blessings to this beautiful couple, may you bring them peace and many years of joy" with tears in her eyes she kissed them both on the cheeks, turning together to walk the illuminated road she felt Geralt come up to her side, his presence felt right, filling her with a foreshadowing of something new uncurling in her heart as they walked with the bride and groom to the main dwelling.
Tobias and Renee were standing on the balcony of their apartment at the estate. The sound of music and laughter floating up to them as the celebrations raged on. The love Julia had shown to Tobias and his bride had touched him deeply. The evening had been more than he could have ever imagined. Now with Renee tucked against his side he felt complete, as they looked at the stars. This was their favourite place to be, and it helped to calm his nerves being in this familiar embrace . "are you happy Renee, is this how you imagine it would be?" turning to face Tobias Renee reached up and cupped his face her thumb tracing the line of his cheekbone as she spoke softly. "I would have been happy if we were in feed sacks and it was just my family and yours downstairs. But this" her face held an overwhelmed awe.
"This was beyond any expectations; Julia truly loves you and it has been made even more evident by how lavishly she had blessed us." Tobias smiled down at her chuckling at the dimples the were deepening as her smile echoed his "I think she also loves you; I have seen how close you have gotten over the last few weeks." Tobias tucked a strand of her sandy hair behind her ear, his pulse racing at the intimacy he felt as his voice deepened "and I am glad for it. For whom could not love my sweet and beautiful wife" at this he bent and kissed Renee softly, she responded gently at first then deepened their kiss with more intensity, together they moved to the bridal bed both nervous but happy to explore this new journey together.
Back at the celebrations, Julia found herself lounging against a very warm and firm chest, as the night had progressed, and the wine had flowed she had found herself becoming more and more comfortable with Geralt's touch. So, when he saw how tired she was and suggested she rest against him there was no hesitation. Feeling snug and secure she looked around the room with satisfaction. Once again, her house would be known for its celebrations, and it warmed her heart to see the happy faces, people dancing to the minstrel's tunes, and people lounging engaged in discussion. Contentment filled her heart as her body began to slip into unconsciousness.
Geralt was relaxed, and thanks to his gentle coaxing he had Julia in his arms. He could smell her honeysuckle scented hair as her head rested just below his chin. His eyes strayed allowing himself to look closely at the woman in his arms. Julia didn't seem to know what her very presence did to him. Her hair tonight was a mass of curls, and it took all his self-control not to reach out and play with it. Her dress hugged her figure in all the right places, and ..... What was he doing? He pulled his mind back from where his thoughts were headed. The last time he had allowed himself to get close to a woman other than the ones he paid for was Yennefer. She was like night and day with Julia. Where Julia was compassion, warmth and peace. Yennefer was passion, anger and chaos. Could he, would he risk opening his heart to Julia? subtle as it was her relaxed body now snuggled even further into his chest, and if he judged her weight right, she was falling asleep.
Knowing that the celebration would continue till sunrise he shifted his body so he could pick Julia up in his arms. Carrying her down the marble corridor to her room he placed her on the bed. Tucking her in he went to move away but she captured his hand. "stay with me, I'm cold" Julia whispered. Not sure if she would feel the same way in the morning but not willing to ignore such an invitation Geralt took off his sandals and slipped in beside her pulling her close. She buried her back against his chest and sighed before even breathing showed she had fallen asleep. Geralt, however, did not sleep for a long time. Holding this precious woman in his arms was comforting and at the same time torcher. In the still of the moment watching her sleep he decided she was too special to ignore, tomorrow he would tell her how he felt. Mind made up he fell into a deep sleep.

The sun streamed through the window as Julia roused from a deep sleep. Conversations from the night before rang in her head, "Can you forgive me for not believing you, for pushing you away?" his eyes held hers, unwavering in his resolve to claw back what they once had. "I can forgive you Geralt, Can you forgive me for also pushing you away in my grief and fear" he had rested his head against hers at the sound of her request. Pulling her into his arms and breathing in the honeysuckle of her hair he had whispered: "Yes my love, I forgive you."
They had fallen asleep in that position snuggled into each other both finally able to get some true sleep. Now she could hear his gentle snores beside her, a sound that filled her with calm. It had been all too quiet in their room when he was gone. Getting up she moved to the bathroom, the morning sickness had lingered well into the middle of her second trimester and now instead of the need to be sick waking her, it was her need to relieve herself that was a constant wake up call. After freshening up she walked back into her room. There she found Geralt sitting up resting against the headboard and looking out at the garden. At her entrance, he turned towards her a small smile gracing his lips. He gestured for her to come back and join him which she did wholeheartedly.
Once in his arms, she wondered at his silence. He moved his hand to lay on her now protruding belly. The contact created a warmth that spread across her abdomen. Looking into his eyes she saw a sparkle of hope and look of amazement crossed his features. "what Geralt? What is it?" He chuckled "He can sense me....... when I place my hand on your stomach his heartrate increased but not in a distressing way. It's almost like it's his way of showing me he knows I'm here." At the sound of his voice, Julia felt a kick. It was not the first but it was stronger than the others had been.
Moving his hand to where the kick had happened they waited. Geralt looked at her furrowing his brow "Why did you move my hand?" as he spoke he felt the small movement under his palm and a surprising look broke out on his face. Julia laughed, in fact, she laughed so much that Geralt could not help join her as they shed the weeks of tension and fear that had been weighing heavy on their shoulders. The sound must have carried down the hall as a knock was heard as they settled. Making sure they were covered she called "Come in" still in her bedclothes Ciri entered the room. Seeing the smiles on her parent's faces and Julia's open-armed invitation she ran to the bed and joined her family.
Ciri snuggled into Julia's arm, father and daughter now cocooning Julia. Laughing Geralt pulled Ciri's hand and placed it on the same spot his hand had just been "say something Ciri" at the sound of his voice another kick was given and Ciri laughed in response "Is that our little guy?" Julia sighed at that comment "Ok are you both conspiring or do you both truly believe our little one is a boy?" Geralt's face softened, as he questioned: "what do you think it will be?" She stilled for a moment. For the first time since she had told Geralt her mind was quiet enough to truly rest and feel. Her mind filled with images, finally resting on a picture of a white-haired little boy with eyes a vibrant blue staring back at her. "Ohhhh" she looked at Geralt then Ciri, "I think your right"
That morning at breakfast the rest of the family could not believe the transformation in Geralt. It wasn't that he had returned to his old self. Instead, he was laughing, bubbling with excitement that affected everyone at the table. During the meal, Lambert leaned over to Ciri and whispered knowing that all the Witcher's could hear, "tell me did you put a spell on him?" eyebrow raised in astonishment. Ciri chuckled and she could see the twinkle in her dad's eye at the question. Responding she whispered back "No, but I think his eyes have finally been opened to the possibility this is the real deal"
More weeks passed and the estate finally settled into a good routine. Geralt made sure Julia was looked after as he now took full responsibility for her care. Ciri had insisted that she help in her care as well as claiming a vested interest in the baby's welfare.
For the last few nights, Julia had been restless. Her back ached and her mind was filled with images of her little boy. Tossing again to find a comfortable position she heard Geralt's deep voice whisper "Having trouble sleeping?" frustrated now that she had woken him she said in exasperation "I just can't get comfortable, every time I think he has settled he moves and ......" her voice broke as Geralt began to massage the tighter muscles in her back. Gratitude filled her at his touch "mmm thank you Geralt that helps but I think I will go float in the spring it might help."
Quietly She moved down the hall and entered the healing room. Slipping off her robe she stepped into the spring its warmth easing her tired muscles. As she floated her belly protruding from the water she felt a ripple in the water. Standing up she watched with a smile as Geralt moved towards her. His features were soft and relaxed as a groan left his mouth, "These waters always make me feel so good. After you left I couldn't fall back asleep I hope you don't mind me joining you." He smirked a bit as he finally reached her wrapping her up in his arms. Leaning down he kissed her softly on the lips. She smiled as he rested his head on her hers "No my love I don't mind."
The waters felt so good, but having Julia in his arms was what he had truly sort out. After tossing and turning for a few minutes he had decided to join her in the spring. Walking into the healing rooms the sight that beheld him was beautiful. Her body floating, face, breasts, and belly like a cluster of islands surrounded by water. Shedding his own robe near hers he entered the spring. He could hear the two heartbeats one fast one slowly speeding up at his intrusion. As she stood his arms ached to hold her to shower her with kisses. Which he was now enjoying as they lazily enjoyed each other. His head rested into the crook of her neck breathing in the smell of honeysuckle when he heard the sound of his little one's heartbeat increase.
Geralt felt Julia's body stiffen and breathing increase as panic filled her face, "what's wrong Julia" He felt her fingers gripping into his shoulders with surprising strength. A moment later her breathing settled and she looked into his eyes "I think its started."
A pounding began breaking through Renee's happy dream. Knowing that Tobias had been awake late into the night with the twins she swung her legs out of the bed. Wrapping her robe about her she heard the pounding continue. Opening the door she was met with a sight she never hoped to see again. A large wet naked white-haired Witcher, eyes wild as he breathes "It's Julia, The baby, started, Spring " Deciphering the coded message she smiled, closing the door she walked quickly to be in front of her father in law so as not to see anything more. She could hear the gentle moans as she walked into the healing room. Julia gripping onto the edge of the spring. Mind changing to that of a healer she moved to where she was gripping "Julia, are they coming quickly?" Pain filled eyes looked into hers as she nodded.
Not wanting to move her out of the warm spring she instructed Geralt to go to her. Grateful that now he was covered under the water she took off her robe and moved towards Julia her nightgown getting wet but all she had on her mind was Julia. Ideas ran through her mind until it settled on one. Ready to be the midwife she needed to be she instructed Geralt to sit on the bench seat and pull Julia up to rest her back on his chest. He placed his hands around her waist and pulled her in gently massaging her sides as he did. Now Renee was able to check her belly it was tight and thankfully felt like the baby was nestled in the right position low into her pelvis. They stayed like that for some time as each wave of contraction pulled on Julia's body, she squeezed Geralt's hands pushing back into him as each wave passes.
Finally, two hours later Renee could feel the soft hair at the top of the baby head. "Ok Julia, where almost there, you need to push on the next contraction ok?" She looked up into the tired face of her mother in law, her hair was matted around her face. Her cheeks were red from the exertion. Behind her, Geralt's head rested next to her head whispering words of love and encouragement as another contraction hit. Bearing down with all her might Renee watched as the little body slipped from its mother. Lifting the babe quickly out of the water, she cleared his little mouth and not long after a lusty cry was heard.
Geralt's heart raced as all at once Julia slumped against him and in front of him, he watched Renee lift the child out of the water. Tears sprung to his eyes as he saw first the white tufts of curly hair slick to the child's head, then the cry that sprung from its lips. Renee moved the child up to Julia's chest as both mother and father wrapped their arms around the crying babe. Geralt could not believe his eyes, his little boy now snuggling into his mother's chest. Moments moved slowly, he could sense Renee moving quickly around the room gathering who knows what. It wasn't till he saw her lay a small blanked over the child and step back into the water with cutting utensils in hand that he knew. Moments later Julia tensed up in his arms again as Renee encouraged her to push. This time it was the placenta that was expelled from her body.
Julia was tired, every muscle in her body ached but through the weariness, she felt also elation. Behind her was her strong warrior, who was now weeping into her neck, in front of her the caring face of her daughter in law tears cascading down her face now her job was over. And in her arms the small body of her baby boy who had managed to find his way to her breast and was suckling taking his first drink of her milk. Unable to fathom this little miracle she looked down at his tiny face. The soft down of his white hair now sticking up as the curls had dried. His little lips moving in the sucking motion as he drank, she lifted her hand to caress his cheek. "Geralt, he's so perfect" she felt Geralt's lips move on her shoulder as he looked down at his son, "He is perfect my beloved, and so are you. I am so proud of how strong you were today." Her heart burst with the love she felt for both her men as she rested her head into Geralt's shoulder.
Her chambers had never been so full of people, Julia continued to rest against Geralt however this time it was against there the headboard of there bed. Their tiny little boy was resting in her arms, Geralt's arms encircling them both. So much love was felt, both Amelia and Wilfred sat at the end of the bed hoping to get a glimpse of the baby. Around the room, there was no one missing even Yen had come back from Aretuza to see the miracle child.
Ciri came close to the bed to see her brother. If his soft white hair and pale ash skin was not a clear indication that he was his father's son then the clincher was his eyes. Peering up at her she could not help but catch her breath as his soft blue eyes caught hers. It was not the colour of blue that was so beguiling but the small patch of yellow in the top of his right eye that helped everyone know. Smiling up at Julia and Geralt she asked "So what are you going to name him? Husband and wife looked at each other with soft looks in their eyes as they said "Caleb"

Chapter 10
Geralt didn't sleep well, tossing and turning with the conversations from last night running through his mind. The Look in Julia's eyes as she said "I understand if you feel you need to go. It's your job and they need you" but her eyes betrayed her true feeling of fear, as unshed tears shimmered as she spoke. Even as they said goodnight, she had lingered in his arms seeming to not want to let go. It broken his heart closing the door and not following her back to her room. Turning for the final frustrating time Geralt sat up. He could hear Ciri's gentle deep breathing and decided to go for a ride to clear his head.
Walking out to the stables Geralt started to saddle up Rose. The beautiful horse reminded him so much of Roach that he fell into his natural compulsion to talk about his problems with her. Leaning his forehead against roses neck he spoke "What am I going to do Rose? I want to stay but I know that if I don't go more people will be killed." Sensing her friend's discomfort Rose neighed as if trying to comfort him. Pulling himself into the saddle Geralt headed off as the sun started to peek over the trees.
It had been a long day for Julia, once again she stood looking out at the garden the sun streaking through the clouds as it headed to bed. Geralt had been noticeably absent at breakfast and she had not seen him since. Even though she wanted to drop everything and go searching for him she had responsibilities. Renee sensing her friends unease came and sat near Julia, not sure what to say she just waited for her to speak.
Still staring out at the garden Julia whispered "I am going to have to let him go again, Renee. I don't want to; I want to pull rank and tell him he can't go. But then I will be in the same place I was 4 years ago. I need him to go knowing that he is supported and will be welcomed home." she shifted to look at Renee, her anxiety and fear bringing tears to her eyes. Renee seeing her friends anguish pulled her into a hug. She could not imagine having to say goodbye to Tobias especially now. She had a secret she wanted to share with Julia but in her current state, Renee felt it was not the right time.
Dinner was once again a quiet affair, Tobias was absent attending to a dispute that had arisen between two of the new servants and he was yet to return. His abilities to calm situations and help resolve conflict were a great asset to her estate especially when Julia herself was being more and more preoccupied. So, it was just the girls here tonight. Julia worried about Geralt's absence, she had an unsettling feeling that he had left already. She hoped that this was just an irrational thought that he would let them know before he left. Even so, Julia could not shake the feeling that it occupied her thoughts that she would lose him forever.
Their evening dragged by slowly, Ciri went to bed at 9 pm, the poor girl was also worried about Geralt but could not keep her eyes open, so Renee took her to bed. Julia unable to concentrate on anything just stared into the fire. Every few minutes she looked at the clock on the mantel as the hands ticked by the knot of dred tightened in her stomach. Both Tobias and Renee noticed her fretting, Julia was wringing her hands in her skirt, her eyes darting between the fire and the clock. However, no amount of attempts to engage her in conversation seem to work. At 11 pm they bid her goodnight and left hoping that Geralt was not gone but just detained somewhere.
Geralt arrived late, the house was dark, swearing himself all kinds of a fool at letting the night get so late. He first went to make sure Ciri was in bed, after making sure she was tucked in safe he went to find Julia. The library was cold the fire long put out; the healing room was dark. Realising that the only place she could be was in bed he stood at her door. It had been weeks since they had spent the night together, knowing he needed to see her, to let her know what had happened, he slipped into the room. The moon illuminated the bed, he could see that Julia's face was tear-streaked.
He hoped that it was not him that had caused the tears. Sadly, he sensed that it was more than likely his absence, and stupidity of not communicating where he was going that morning that had caused them. Slipping off his sandals and outer garments Geralt slipped into the sheets and pulled Julia into his arms.
Rather than the resistance he was expecting she turned to towards him, her hand reaching up to the side of his face. The look in her eyes was one of disbelief, then relief and then something else. Her soft hands caressing his cheek reached up behind his neck and pulled him towards her. Her lip sought his softly at first as if to determine they were truly there. Then she increased her intensity her lips opening, their tongues dancing in a heated display, desperate to find each other. Her desperation spilling into every movement of her body as she sought out his touch. Clinging to him as if he would disappear if she let go. Geralt taken by surprise by her passionate response. He let go of his resolve and responded in kind, all the anxiety of the day, the worry and indecision disappeared. Right now the only thought left was the feel of this passionate woman in his arms. All boundary's, all restraint, all disappeared, as they sort assurance, acceptance, and comfort in pleasure.
Moonlight softly caressed Geralt's face as Julia silently studied his sleeping form. When Geralt had slipped into her bed that night she had been so sure he had already left. His arms around hers had knocked down the last of her defenses. Every bit of self-restraint she had disappeared into the deep fear of losing him. However, as the haze of pleasure lifted from her brain, reality hit of what she had just done. Would he lose his respect for her now? Would she be able to forgive herself? All sense of peace she once had seemed to be replaced with a tight knot in her middle. A different fear.
It was not Geralt's fault he didn't live by the same code she did. Yes, she knew he had understood her need to take it slow, but she had never talked with him about her need to keep lovemaking as something special between a committed couple. That for her had always meant marriage. Last night had been different, her body had remembered the steps of the dance. Her mind had given up restraint and instead of the sweet lovemaking she remembered with Wilfred this had felt desperate and left her feeling hollow inside. For there was no promise of tomorrow, no certainty that he would return instead just an empty place now filling her heart. Unable to sleep, Julia feeling a need to prepare for his departure silently left the room. With an ache in her heart she moved to what she knew best, the comfort of her herbs and elixirs in the healing room.
Geralt awoke to an empty bed. The sun was just peering over the tops of the trees in the garden, a warm glow streaking across the sky. However, Geralt felt cold. Somehow, he knew even in the heat of passion that he should have stopped, but he just could not. His own need to tell her how much he wanted her, needed her, overtook his resolve. Geralt berated himself, he knew even if she didn't verbalise it how much that act was precious to her. Groaning Geralt got out of bed, he had committed to the villager that he would go with him this morning. He had every intention of talking it through with Julia when he got home but...... groaning again and running his hand over his face Geralt went in search of the one person he needed to see before he left.
Geralt found Julia in the healing room, she was seated at one of her desks, bottles, and books scattered in front of her. He walked up and placed a hand on her shoulder, she didn't shrink from his touch, but she didn't relax into it either. Pulling a chair up next to her Geralt sat down and decided small talk would be a good start "what are you researching?"
Julia didn't look up at him but spoke while she mixed the potions and read "I'm preparing your elixirs for your battle with the Bruxa. I've already put together the general healing herbs and elixirs, I have this book passed to me by my mother, it had been given to her by an old man many years ago on his death bed, it explains the Witcher's elixirs. This says you need black blood if you're going to have any defense against a Bruxa. Is that right? It says it acts like poison if she drinks your blood."
Geralt was shocked into silence. The potions and elixirs that the Witcher's used were a trade secret never shared outside the guild. The old man must have been an old Witcher who seeing Julia's mothers art of healing and not wanting it to fall into the wrong hands entrusted it to her. Responding with a shocked voice he said "Yes, that's right but you must know this book is rare. You must keep it safe and not show it to anyone else." His voice must have held some authority as it caused Julia to look up at him with surprise.
Julia already feeling upset over last night faced Geralt. She could see in his eyes, his voice when speaking about the book held an edge as if she was in trouble for even daring to read it. She responded in frustration "You are the only reason I ever looked at it or used it. It's the reason you healed as quickly as you did on arrival here Geralt" feeling cross that he would speak to her like he had, she closed the book and returned it to its hiding place. "Don't worry I won't use it again" she had already completed what he would need and the last one, black blood she had just finished.
Something was wrong; Julia had never spoken to Geralt in such a cross tone and Geralt had never spoken to Julia in such a gruff way. Sensing it had to do with last night Geralt decided to speak directly. Time was running out, and he needed to leave knowing she was going to be ok. Standing he moved to her and taking her hand silently pulled her to the bay window day bed. Had it only been weeks since he had knelt before her here declaring that he might be falling in love with her, and sharing their first kiss? It had seemed a lifetime ago, and now he needed to let her know again, but was Julia the someone he could make the ultimate commitment to? Was he ready for that?
Julia allowed herself to be led by Geralt, she sensed their time was short and even though she was cross with him she did not want to repeat history. Geralt sat turned towards her on the day bed, and taking her hand he began to explain what had happened the day before "I'm sorry I disappeared yesterday, I could not shake the information from the letter and went for an early morning ride to clear my head. By the time I could make some sense of what I needed to do I found myself in the village. Realising I needed to talk to the man I went to the tavern and the publican who was serving breakfast introduced me. The villager's son was the latest victim, his grief was fueling his resolve and desperation to find me. We talked for hours and when I realised that my mind was made up, I set about getting preparations for the trip. I went and saw the local leather smith who is making me a new set of Armor. I also went and saw the merchant who made my steal sward. He is making me a silver one. Both agreed in the urgency and said they would have them ready for me by mid-morning today. After the final preparations were made I headed back to the Tavern and had dinner with the villager as we finalised our travel plans. I didn't mean to return so late last night." Geralt's eyes pleaded with Julia to understand.
Geralt waited, knowing the next part was the hardest. He could sense Julia's discomfort. Softening his voice, he continued, "All I wanted to do was talk with you, to share what had happened and I could not find you. It became apparent that you had gone to bed. I needed to see you, to tell you why I made the decision I did. I could see you had been crying and all I wanted to do was soothe you, I....." at this point Julia stopped him reaching up a hand to his face.
Softly she spoke "I'm sorry Geralt, it was not your fault. I never set a clear boundary. I never spoke to you about what my convictions were. Last night I went to bed with such a strong sense that you were gone that when I felt your arms around me, I lost all control. I knew you were leaving. I didn't give you any signal to stop. Can you ever forgive me Geralt?" at this last statement Geralt pulled Julia into his arms and held her tight. Never in his life had he known someone to be so selfless, to hold such strong convictions, or to have such a hold over his heart. He vowed to himself at that moment if he survived this next journey, he would never leave her again. Pulling back, he leaned his forehead on hers "Yes Julia I forgive you, and will you forgive me for not protecting you? For not being strong for you as you asked me too all those months ago?" at this Julia, tears streaming down her cheeks breathed a yes.
Wiping her tears away Geralt regretfully moved away from her, he had to get moving. People were waiting for him. The following moments were filled with quite as they packed the elixirs and herbs into a travel bag. Julia organised food for his trip with Nessie and then met Geralt and Ciri in the stables. On entering the stables, she saw Ciri and Geralt in deep conversation heads lowered speaking in a hushed tone. When they were finished, they hugged and Ciri looked up and saw Julia. Julia saw the look in Ciri's eyes they echoed her own pain of saying goodbye. Handing Geralt the food Julia turned to Rose and spoke firmly to the horse "now you take good care of Geralt" the horse whinnied back in response as if to say "Of course mistress" this set the sober trio to laughing.
Geralt hugged Julia and kissed her softly on the lips. Julia then stepped back next to Ciri putting her arm around her and pulling her close as Geralt mounted. He gazed at both Julia and Ciri with a softness as he said "I love you" then nudging rose set off in a gallop towards the Village. Julia and Ciri looked after Geralt until he had disappeared from sight. The somber pair turned together and headed into the house neither speaking, but both thinking that was the first time he had ever said those three words.

Chapter 8
Julia and Renee were cleaning up after a particularly difficult client when Yennefer stormed into the room. Her eyes glowing violet she started yelling as soon as the door closed. "You have no right to hold Geralt prisoner as a slave, Witcher's are their own masters and no one has the right to own them. You must set him free" Julia could not only see the anger, but she sensed the energy radiating off Yennefer. Taking a breath to calm her own anger at the accusation she spoke in an even-toned voice. " I might own Geralt on paper, but I have never treated him as a servant. If he requests his freedom it will be granted. I don't wish to hold him here any longer than he wishes to stay" this defused some of Yennefer's anger, but both women still stared at each other not knowing what else to say.
Tobias had been instructing Harlan in the garden near the healing rooms when he heard the yelling. He knew that Renee was working with Julia today, and afraid for both Renee and Julia's safety started running to the room. As he headed into the corridor, he saw Geralt running from the direction of the stables both men met as Geralt pulled at the door and they entered both worried about what they would find. Taking in the scene Tobias noted Yennefer standing purple eyes glowing and her stance was one ready to act. Renee was standing behind Julia a hand on her back showing her support. She looked at Tobias as they communicated silently with each other. Geralt moved to Yennefer and placed a hand on her shoulder, "Yen please" Yennefer shrugged him off standing even more rigid seeing Julia look at Geralt. Not knowing what to do Tobias cleared his throat and spoke: "Ok everyone please take a breath."
Angry Violet eyes flared at him. "Can I suggest that you all go about your tasks for this evening and tonight we can meet in the library and talk it through" Tobias could see a look of gratitude from Julia. Yennefer left going to find Ciri, Geralt turned a stony glare at Tobias wanting to stay and talk to Julia but seeing her not acknowledge him but rather turn back to what she was doing he relented and silently moved away terrified that he had just lost all chances with Julia.
Julia was filled with anxiety as she paced the Library, Renee and Tobias sat near her, she was grateful for them as she would have been in a worse state if they weren't there. It had been an awkward dinner, even Ciri was subdued picking up on the tension. Now they waited for Yennefer and Geralt to put Ciri to bed and return to the library. Continuing her pacing Julia could not hold it in anymore "I'm so confused, just yesterday he was asking to court me, holding me and even last night pleaded to sleep close to me. And then this morning I see him coming out from the gardens with Yennefer leaves and twigs in his hair. What would you conclude from that? And today Yennefer comes raging into the clinic demanding his freedom. Is that all he see's, that I own him, is that why he's been so caring and affectionate to make the most of his situation?"
Renee felt awful, she had been a part of encouraging Julia to open her heart to Geralt. Putting her head on Tobias's shoulder she felt his stiffness and anger, she knew how protective of Julia he was. He put an arm around Renee while he spoke " Julia I don't know what's going on in that man's head, but we need to hear them out. Whatever happens, you know we're here for you." Julia sat her head in her hands she didn't know what to think, her heart ached and so did her head. There were no premonitions, no foresight to help her see what to do next. It was like the blinders had been put on again, the only thing she could think to do was remove the problem. She needed to give Geralt his freedom then if he stayed, they would need to work out their relationship and if he left, she would know that he was never hers to start off with.
Geralt and Yennefer walked towards the library, both not quite sure what they would encounter. Yennefer was such an unknown in Geralt's life he could not understand why she wanted to get him his freedom. He could only think that if Yen couldn't have him then no one should. They entered the Library. Julia was sitting on the single sofa head in her hands, Renee and Tobias sitting on the 3-seater, so he deferred the other seat to Yennefer. He sat on the rug in front of the fire. Looking at Julia he felt so much guilt seeing her pain-filled eyes that he lowered his head not wanting to see the hurt in her eyes again.
Clearing his voice Tobias spoke up "Firstly, Yennefer we need to know why you came here in the first place before we can talk about the elephant in the room." Yennefer who had been smoothing her skirt as she waited turned to look at Tobias, sighing she said "Ciri is why I came here; I remembered the love in this house and the security. Wilfred and I spoke so much of you Julia on our trip back to Temeria that I knew this would be the best place to hide her. She is special, not only is she the sole survivor of the royal household of Cintra, but she also has elven blood. The kings of the continents are looking for her to use her as a pawn to control what is left of Cintra. I needed someplace that no one would look and where she would be cherished. I also remembered your healing abilities Julia and the help you gave me. I had hoped you could work with Ciri she's been through a lot, But it looks to me like things have changed here. I haven't seen Wilfred so he must still be travelling a lot, and I don't see any children about."
At this Julia looked up at Yennefer, eyes brimming with tears as she softly spoke "you didn't know? I never saw him again after he left with you. He was killed by the Scoia'tael on the way back. So yes, this house has changed and no there are no children." Renee moved towards her placing a hand on her back to comfort her. Geralt hearing her pain and how Yennefer was a part of that pain wanted so much to go to Julia and comfort her as well, but his feelings of guilt held him frozen in place.
Yennefer's face contorted at the softly spoken words of Julia; she had not known of the death of Wilfred. He had been a gentleman and the whole trip had talked about Julia and their plans. It saddened her to know that he had not made it home. Tobias spoke acting as the mediator "thank you Yennefer for sharing that with us, please know that her identity will be kept safe here. Julia, if we can settle the other issue tonight are you ok with Ciri staying here? Renee and I would be willing to help you care for her" Renee also adding in an excited voice "Yes I would be happy as well Julia"
Julia looked up and with red eyes focused on Geralt, he almost looked as dejected as the day they met sitting on his knees head down. Needing to hear what Ciri was to Geralt she asked him "Geralt, what relationship do you have with Ciri, why does she cling to you as a child does to a father?" Geralt looked up at Julia their eyes meeting until Yennefer answered for him. "Ciri is Geralt's child surprise, they are bound together by destiny." Looking at Yennefer Julia frowned and then back to Geralt "so she's your child" Geralt nodded not trusting his voice. "Then yes she can stay here. No matter what the outcome is of the rest of this discussion" looking at Tobias and Renee she smiled at them "I will hold you to your offer of help especially as the healing rooms are getting busy."
Tobias wanting to move the conversation along looked at Julia "Julia I believe after Yennefer's outburst this afternoon you wanted to address the servant issue." Taking a deep breath Julia stood and moved to kneel in front of Geralt, she took his hands in hers and forced a smile. "Geralt, Yennefer was right today, you are a Witcher, you are not meant to be a servant. You are healed and your strength is back. You are free to go." Kissing him on the forehead she stood all her resolve draining away as she saw the look of hurt in his eyes. Unable to keep herself together she hastily retreated out of the room tears streaming down her face, but she knew she needed to let him go if he was ever to have a free will choice.
The room was silent, Renee and Tobias sat looking at each other stunned with what Julia had done. They both knew how much she had grown to love Geralt even if she was only just beginning to show it. Tobias had seen the look on her face right from the day she had bought him back to the estate. His heart ached for his beloved mistress knowing how hard what she said would have been.
Geralt was lost he could not understand why she had told him to go. He had to go after her, had to make her see sense, standing Geralt moved to leave but Yennefer grabbed his arm. "where are you going Geralt, your free didn't you hear her you don't have to go chasing after her." Looking at Yennefer he saw confusion and pain cross her features, frustrated by her lack of understanding he pulling his arm free from Yennefer's grasp, turned and ran after Julia.
Julia couldn't face her empty bed, instead, she went to the healing room to look out at the stars. She sat facing the window tears running unchecked down her face. She had so many memories from this spot, many with Wilfred but they had been fading of late with new memories taking their place. She shivered putting her arms around herself. A blanket wrapped around her shoulders and Geralt came around into her field of vision. Kneeling at her feet Geralt look up at her, his amber yellow eyes filled with concern and care.
Geralt looked into Julia's eyes he could see that she had been crying. He reached up and brushed a tear from her cheek as he spoke in a hushed voice. "Julia, thank you for giving me my freedom. I love how much you care about people and I love that you fight for what you think is right." He smiled a tender smile at her "I want you to know I care about you, I even think I'm falling in love with you but if you don't want me around I'll leave." Julia's eyes widened at Geralt's confession.
Julia didn't want Geralt to leave but she also didn't want him to stay if he really loved another. The events of the last two days were conflicting in her mind. If she were to answer him truthfully, she needed answers "Geralt why did you leave my bed this morning? And why did I see you coming out from the garden with Yennefer looking like you had taken a tumble in the leaves?"
Geralt tried to think through the questions the first was easy, the second would mean owning up to the kiss. He got up off his knees and sat down next to Julia on the day bed, turning Julia to face him. Picking up her hand Geralt ran his thumb over the top of her knuckles caressing her skin. Honesty he needed, to be honest, that was the only way to show Julia that he was sincere in his declaration. "Ok......... this morning I woke early just as the sun was coming up. I was restless and I didn't want to wake you up, so I went for a walk in the garden. I honestly was planning on being back by your side when you awoke but fate had other plans. As I was wrestling in my mind over Yen and Ciri showing up I literally bumped into Yen. She didn't know it was me and using magic threw me across the garden. I landed in a hedge hence the leaves and twigs in my hair."
Julia waited as she sensed there was more. Shifting uncomfortably but knowing he had to speak the rest Geralt said "We sat on the bench in the middle of the garden and talked. A lot has happened in the kingdoms since I have been in captivity and here. This village seems to be isolated from the turmoil going on. While we were talking Yen did kiss me and I was tempted but I kept seeing your eyes in my mind, so I pulled back. I know Yen was confused I have never denied her before. She could tell something had changed, that I have changed. I'm sorry I wasn't there when you awoke."
Still feeling fragile and unsure of what she thought Julia knew there was one thing she could do. One thing that would answer her question. The one thing they had yet to do. Staring into Geralt's amber yellow eyes Julia put her hand on the side of his face. His eyes questioning as she smoothed his white hair back and leaned in to kiss him gently on the lips. She pulled back for just a moment as their eyes reconnected and she saw a light blazing in Geralt's eyes that told her what she needed to know.
Geralt with all his self-control leaned back in and gently kissed her back only to be met with a stronger passionate response from Julia. All the teasing from the last two days and the chemistry that had been building over the last few months were felt in that kiss. After a few more minutes the pulled apart hearts racing both gasping for air. Geralt knowing he was losing control so pulled back further looking into Julia's eyes.
Julia was overwhelmed almost ashamed at how much passion she had just shown Geralt but decided to not worry any more, eyes sparkling she said "Well that just answered that question, Yes I want you to stay Geralt. Not as my servant but to see where this new journey might lead." Smiling Geralt laid back on the day bed and pulled Julia into his arms both breathing deeply to slow the moment. The two gazed at the stars both content and at peace.
Julia awoke still feeling the strong arms around her. They had fallen asleep looking at the stars enjoying each other's warmth. Looking up she saw the last of the stars beginning to fade as the sun peaked over the garden. Geralt was on his back and she was snuggled into his chest. Julia didn't want to move, she was enjoying the feel of his arms around her, but her clients would start arriving in the next few hours and she needed to shower and dress for the day. "Geralt" she whispered "mmmmm" came back his groggy reply. "We have to get up. It's morning and I have clients arriving in a few hours." Geralt's response was to pull her closer and kiss her gently on the lips. Giggling Julia pushed away and poked him in the chest "That's not helping Geralt" a light rumbling laughter floated up from his chest "Can't fault a Witcher for trying"
They both sat up grinning at each other. It was the start of a new day.

Chapter 13
Geralt was standing by the bay window staring at the stars. It seemed appropriate to Geralt that he was waiting here. This spot where so many life-altering decisions were made. He heard footsteps behind him, sure and steady. Not ready to turn he waited till the sound of the footsteps reached him. Taking a deep breath, he turned around ready for whatever answer Tobias would bring.
Tobias and Geralt were facing each other again but this time Tobias was ready with a response "Geralt we talked it over, I hope you understand why we did not just answer you directly. There are so many factors to consider and I do not take the responsibility lightly that you have placed in our hands. We have three questions for you to think about, these are our only concerns and when we say concerns, I believe you need to talk them through with Julia, not us. One: We need you to think about the toll being a Witcher will take on Julia and by that we mean you being asked to travel for many days and weeks to dispatch monsters. Two: The relationship you have with Yennefer and how that fits with Ciri; even if your relationship is over, Yennefer is still apart of Ciri's life and we don't believe that should be stopped, again this is a question you need to discuss with Julia."
Tobias took a breath and made his final discussion point knowing that this would be one of the hardest to hear. "and three: Julia has always wanted children as I believe you have already seen. We know you cannot have natural children, so it is important to have this discussion as well." Seeing Geralt's face fall at the final discussion point Tobias moved closer to him and with compassion added "I don't see these points as deal-breakers or reasons not to ask her. If you talk these things through and she still is amenable then you have our blessing to ask her the final question" at this final statment Geralt looked up at Tobias with hope in his eyes he reached out to shake his hand but Tobias pulled the big man into a hug. "As Julia said to my wife all those months ago. We don't shake hands with family" he was not sure how to respond to this affirmation that Tobias saw him as family. Instead Geralt stood stiffly in Tobias' arms until he let him go. Chuckling Tobias grinned at Geralt "you will have to get used to being hugged Geralt" still chuckling he bid him goodnight and left to join his wife is slumber.
The following day Geralt went early to find Nessie, he filled her in on his plans to take Julia for a pitnic. They were standing in the kitchen discussing what food he needed when Renee joined them. Geralt, wondering what else he needed to prepare asked Renee " how many patients does Julia have today?" she rubbed her chin with her thumb and pointer finger and said "I believe all the patients booked for today can be handled by myself as long as Tobias is available to help me. I'll go ask him before he leaves for the markets", she walked up to Geralt and gave him a big hug "good luck" she said smiling as she left to find Tobias. Chuckling to himself Geralt remembered Tobias's words from the night before, I really will need to get used to this. Turning back to Nessie he saw a tear in her eye that she quickly swiped away and with a soft voice she asked "Is this thee special outing Geralt?" he nodded at Nessie as she too came around and hugged him. Composing herself Nessie said with a wobbly voice "now don't you worry I will have something incredibly special in this basket for you both. Hurry now and go get your other preparations done."
The only thing Geralt needed to do was go and talk to Ciri as this would affect her too. He walked down to Julia's room from which he could hear giggling and water splashing. Knocking on the door he was answered by an out of breath voice "just wait one moment" more giggling ensured. The door opened to show Julia, red-faced, bright smile, and a funny patch of bubbles sitting on her face. Geralt surprised and amused reached his hand out and removed the bubbles from her nose. She looked so adorable right now he was unable to help himself. Leaning down he kissed the spot that was now void of bubbles "Morning" he said in an soft tone, an even more adorable blush crept up Julia's face. His interest peeked by the continued giggling from the bathroom asked, "what mischief are you ladies up to this morning that requires so much silliness?"
Geralt loved seeing the blush on his beloveds face, it made him want to pick her up and keep kissing her. However, he was on a mission and tried to stay focused. Hannah poked her head out of the bathroom also covered in patches of bubbles. "Julia you're missing out on the fun, Oh good morning Geralt" Hannah smiled at him and retreated. With an amused look on his face he chuckled "so bubbles?" Julia struggling to keep the giggles in smiled "yes a merchant from Tamera came through this week and bought with him some fun bathroom items, one in particular that bubbles when mixed with water. Ciri used too much and we're now enjoying the fun it created" at that Julia could not help but break out in another fit of giggles. Pulled into the joy of her face Geralt chuckled and smiled "well when Ciri is finished and de bubbled can you send her out to the stables. With that, he bent and captured her lips in a swift gentle kiss then walked away.
Julia stared at Geralt's retreating figure his kiss lingering on her lips, fighting with herself should she return to the bathroom or run after him for some more of those sweet kisses. Hearing more giggles coming from the bathroom she decided and returned to the chaos. As the door opened floating foam and liquid spheres went flying about the room somewhere in the wash of bubbles was Hannah Ruth and Ciri. The ladies were trying to clean up the mess but with each successful corralling of bubbles, a bust of air from there movement would send them floating about the room. Julia loved the joy she saw of the girl's faces. Best of all was the sound of giggles that kept bursting from their lips. Even though this would eventually leave a horrid mess to clean up it was worth it.
After the bubbles had all lost their form, they left an oily film on every surface. Hannah and Ruth began the arduous task of wiping up and Julia attended to Ciri, helping her dress for the day. Julia let Ciri know of Geralt's request to see her in the stables. The young girl sheepishly looked at Julia she wondered what Geralt wanted, the more she thought about it the more she became worried, she voiced her concern. "Do you think he was upset that I slept in here last night?" seeing the worry on her face Julia put her arm around her and spoke "Ciri I don't think so, your Geralt only wants the very best for you and I think he knew that both of us needed the company. However, lets no try and guess what he wants. It's always best to just go and listen then you won't have to waste time worrying. It might be something entirely different that is his purpose for wanting to see you" With that Julia gave Ciri another hug and sent the girl on her way.
Geralt was getting Rose and Beauty ready for the special ride. He was trying to distract himself from the knots in his stomach worring about what julia's responce will be, when Ciri entered the stables. Grabbing two curry combs he asked "Ciri can you help me comb Beauty?" taking the comb from Geralt, she started to groom Beauty's shiny coat. She watched Geralt for a moment as he focused on the horse. It seemed to her that he was nervous. Despite her nerves and the worry that something was wrong she decided to wait to hear him out. She didn't ask why he wanted to see her but just kept observing and combing Beauty. After a few moments, Geralt cleared his throat causing her to look at him.
Smiling Geralt spoke with a soft tone, "How have you found living here Ciri?" thinking about the question and hoping it was not a signal that they might be moving on Ciri answered hoping to show her enthusiasm "I love it here Geralt, these people are so nice. I love teaching sword fighting to Tobias and the men, Learning, and playing games with Renee." Pausing Geralt prompted her "How do you feel about Julia?" smiling she tried to work out how to describe how she felt about Julia. Scrunching up her nose she blew out a breath and said "I guess she's ok" she giggled at the look on Geralts face of consternation in response to her comment. She then exclaimed hoping to put his mind at ease "Geralt she's wonderful! If we had the choice to never leave here, I would be happy. How do I feel about Julia? She's warm, passionate, wise but can have fun as well. Why are you asking me?"
Geralt was pleased with how Ciri had described Julia. It was obvious to him that while he had been away, they had developed a closer relationship. Grabbing a stool Geralt placed it near another one along the side of a stall and directed Ciri to sit. Turning his full body to face hers Geralt said "Ciri what would you think if I asked Julia to marry me?" Geralt watched as a wave of shock crossed Ciri's face and then was immediately replaced with a huge smile. The next thing Geralt experienced was Ciri's body fiercely hugging his. Ciri pulled back from hugging Geralt with a broad grin on her face "Geralt that's the best news I have ever heard, yes I think you should marry her." Geralt marveled at his daughter. If anyone had told him years ago that he would have a daughter and feel this incredible joy in being around her he would have punched them in the stomach. Even now after having been with her for so long It still felt like a miracle that she was in his life.
Julia had moved from helping Hannah and Ruth with the bathroom to set up the healing rooms ready for the day's patients. This morning's fun had energized her, and so had Geralt's teasing kiss. She had been so worried about him that now he was home it was like she could breathe again. Was it selfish of her to hope that he would never have to be called away to hunt monsters? They still had much to talk about, and she was hoping they would get some time together alone but her week was full and she could not see how that was going to happen anytime soon. Julia heard talking in the corridor as both Renee and Tobias walk in. Surprised to see Tobias still here Julia said, "I thought you were going to be at the markets today Tobias?" A guilty look crossed his face but then it was replaced with a smile "Well there's been a slight change in the scheduling of today Julia. Renee and I will be looking after the patients today. You have an appointment waiting for you in the stables."
Blushing Julia stood up and walked to the couple "What are you talking about? I don't have any scheduled appointments in the stables. I have patients to attend to here today." Tobias uncharacteristically moved to take Julia's hands in his. "Julia, please we have all worked a way for you and Geralt to have a day together. Normally I would not have usurped your authority but in this case, I think it's important. We have all seen how much you missed him and I want you to take this opportunity to have some quality time with him." The way Tobias talked to Julia shook her. Never had this beautiful boy of hers taken a bold tone with her. Sighing she looked to Renee "Are you sure you'll be ok?" Renee, who was now in her second trimester, looked happy and full of energy, her morning sickness had ended thankfully. She responded "Yes Julia, I looked at the list of complaints, and unless there is an emergency I should be able to handle it with Tobias's help" Left with no other reason why she should not go she sighed and relented. "Ok, I'll go. I don't know what you are all up to but I appreciate the kindness" With that she picked up her cardigan that was hanging over the chair and headed for the stables.
She reached the stables just as Geralt returned with the packed lunch that Nessie had prepared for them. Seeing this large muscled warrior walking towards her made her breath hitch. Gone was the weak broken man she had met months ago. In his place was now a strong, confident warrior who in the most surprising moments was also tender and sweet. She could look at him all day given the chance. Geralt tied the Basket to Rose then walked back to Julia and pulled her into his arms. For just a moment Julia remembered their last night before he left. Instead of letting it ruin today she consciously made herself relax in his arms enjoying his strength.
Pulling back a little she looked into his eyes "Hi". Geralt smiled "Hi", giggling a little at their short exchange Julia chidded, "So I have another appointment with you." Geralt laughed remembering their last appointment in the stables. Julia loved his laugh and relished in the sound. When he stopped she continued "I don't know what you said but it seems you have managed to make my household pull all the strings to get me to yourself today" Geralt's eyes sparkled with amusement and a secret that Julia was dying to ask him about. He leaned his head against her forehead and said, "I missed you so much, will you come have a picnic with me?" How could Julia say no to that, in each word she could hear his pleading that echoed her own longing to spend some alone time with him. Sighing she pulled back just enough that she could kiss him on the cheek, "Yes"
Pulling apart Julia walked over to Beauty, stroking him on his nose she said, "were you in on this too Beauty?" an answering whinny came from the horse's mouth causing Julia to laugh. Geralt who had already pulled himself up into roses saddle waited for Julia. Once he saw that she was ready Geralt gave her a side wards glance and said "race you to the watering hole?" thinking he was going to have a better advantage this time he turned to spur Rose on but was once again trumped as Julia and Beauty took off at an incredible speed. Excited by the chase Geralt didn't mind he hoped he would win more than just a race today he wanted to win her heart.

Chapter 11
It had taken a full morning to gather his items from the merchants, and the Villager had met Geralt in the marketplace at noon. After eating a quick meal, they set off. It was a quiet Journey, the Villager whose name was Nial only spoke when necessary which suited Geralt's mood. That night they bedded down at a tavern in the next town. Geralt didn't sleep well, instead, his mind kept running through his plan of attack. The Bruxa had uncanny speed and invisibility so he would need the element of surprise, to catch it in the act of enticing someone. He would only have one chance, once it knew he was there he would have to act fast. Hopefully, striking it with his silver sword and if not then last resort allowing it to bite him which was not an option he wished to pursue.
The day Geralt had left, Julia thankfully had no clients. During the morning Ciri and Julia had distracted themselves in the kitchen with Nessie learning how to bake Nessie's famous chocolate chip cookies. That afternoon Ciri stood in front of a Tobias and 10 other men, she held her sword and instructed them in the art of defensive sword techniques. "Remember to block your opponent, then think strategically don't just act out of anger." Dividing them into pairs they then began to practice her sword movements. Geralt had left instructions for Ciri to teach Tobias and any servants from the estate who wished to learn so there would be more than one prepared to fight.
While they practised Renee and Julia walked in the gardens picking flowers to brighten the bedrooms and the dining hall. As Julia was admiring the vivid colours of the roses, Renee settled her basket next to hers "Julia, I have to tell you something." Julia turned regarding Renee, her young friend seemed to be bursting at the seams with a joy that seemed to radiate from her being. Renee placed her hands on her belly and just smiled at Julia nodding. Pulling Renee into a hug she squeezed her friend, who she now considered as a daughter. Smiling she said "oh Renee, that is so exciting. How long have you known?" blushing Renee said, "I think this is a honeymoon baby"
The following two days Geralt and Nial travelled at a steady pace arriving at his Village late on the third day. The weary travellers were greeted by Nial's wife Anna along with their youngest daughter. Anna led them into the small cottage. They were not poor, but it was a modest home with a single area that served as a living and eating area, as well as the kitchen. Off to the right of this room were two doors leading to the bedrooms one for the parents and one for the children. They shared a simple meal together of steamed vegetables. Together they sat on cushions on the floor around a small low table which held the steaming bowls of food and their cups of water.
Even though they had a terrible loss, there was a palpable love that was shared between them. It was made evident by a look, a gentle touch, and words of praise as Nial said "Anna, this is a beautiful meal. I have missed your cooking while we have been apart." Once the meal was finished Nial's daughter curled up in her father's lap a peace falling over the child's face as the adults talked. Nial making sure his daughter safely tucked in his arms was sleeping directed a more pointed conversation to Geralt "How are you going to catch and kill this monster. What will be your needs to accomplish this?"
Geralt looked to both Nial and Anna expecting to see anger, revenge on their faces but instead saw only sadness. Anna had moved to lean into Nial at this point and the family unit made Geralt's arms ache for Julia and Ciri. Lowering his head he looked at his hands, unsure of how to answer Nial's question. Looking back up to the grieving family he spoke "I will need to be diligent to keep watch to see if any more young men are enticed away from the village. Once I see that I will be able to follow and dispatch the Bruxa. They are cunning and unless they feel safe will not venture near again. I will sleep in this room as the window faces the forest. I should be able to see from this vantage point."
At this the small group fell silent, the weight of what was ahead for the Witcher weighed heavily on his mind. The small family also sensed this and quietly went about setting up for bed. Geralt watched as Nial stood his sleeping child in his arms. A look of love on his face as he gazed at her while walking to her room. Anna moved silently and quickly, setting up a pallet for Geralt to sleep or rest on as he kept watch from the window. She came to his side and placing a small hand on his arm whispered "Thank you for coming, we are praying to the unnamed God that you are successful in your hunt. We don't want any more families to have to endure the pain we have felt." She shyly reached up and kissed him on the cheek before exiting the room.
Geralt's hand went to his cheek, this was the first time outside of Wolnosci that he had been treated with such care. What was it about these people who sprouted homage to this unnamed God! Frustration was building in Geralt, he missed Julia, missed Ciri, and even missed the dam mundane of the estate. Looking out the window he tried to focus to adjust his eyes to the night. An hour passed as he tried to keep his mind focused and then he saw movement.
Julia had not been able to relax since Geralt had left three days ago. Renee and Ciri had tried everything to distract her and Renee had almost succeeded with her news. However here she was again full of worry. Ciri, Renee, and Tobias were doing sums over at the table in the library when Ciri looked over to Julia. She was sitting in her chair staring into the flames again her hands balling in her skirt brow furrowed. Wishing she could do something to ease Julia's worry she spoke to Tobias " Can I be excused, I think I need to go talk with Julia" seeing the concern in Ciri's eyes he excused her.
Ciri walked over to Julia and knelt by her chair, taking Julia's balled hands in hers. This startled Julia who looked down at the child with surprise. Seeing the child wanted to be with her she moved to the rug on the floor just as she would have with Geralt. Maneuvering themselves so Ciri was cuddled into Julia, her arms around the young girl Julia sighed. How did this precious child know she needed this physical contact? Ciri spoke quietly "Julia, Geralt will be ok. He's one of the best of the Witcher's." The young girl's voice held so much conviction Julia could not help but be soothed. Sighing Julia stroked Ciri's arm and responded "I know Ciri, but when you care about someone so deeply. It's hard to trust that they will be ok. You want the best for them, and you want to protect them. I hate that he is putting himself in harm's way. That I'm not there to help him if he is injured." Ciri knew what Julia was saying. She herself had pleaded with Geralt to take her with him so she could fight alongside him. It had only been Geralt extracting a promise to stay and protect Julia that made her agree to let him go.
The clock over the mantel struck 10 and as they all prepared to retire for the night Ciri looked to Julia. Feeling Julia needed more comfort Ciri asked: "Can sleep with you tonight?" Julia also sensing the child needed comfort agreed. Together they walked back to her room. Changing into there nightgowns they moved between the warmed sheets and Julia tucked Ciri into her arms. As Ciri's breathing started to even out, indicating she was falling asleep, Julia looked at the child in her arms. This child who had been unexpected had grown on Julia, and right now she was feeling a warm maternal love growing deeper inside her heart for Geralt's child surprise.
Geralt moved silently amongst the trees, just ahead of him he could see the young man and the tall raven-haired beauty. Her skin so white it glowed under the moon's rays making her hair stand out even more stark against her silhouette. She and the boy stood amongst the trees, her body leaning toward the young man who had fallen on his knees before her. Geralt knew he would only have one chance, one opportunity to kill this creature of the night. Confirming it was a Bruxa he took the vial of Black blood from his small bag hoping this would not be how he would kill the monster. Wanting to cover all his options he swallowed the foul concoction. As he crept closer, he could hear her gentle coaxing, her lullaby of song that held the young man transfixed. Sword in hand he stepped into the clearing and took aim.
The blade connected with the flesh of the creature causing her to scream. The sonic sound echoed through the quiet night. A piercing wave reverberating within his head, causing Geralt to drop his sword, and hold his hands over his ears. The beautiful woman who had been standing in front of the young man now turned into a hideous black bat-like creature. Its hands becoming talons apart from the one which had been removed by the Witcher's first blow. Regaining some equilibrium Geralt dove for his sword as the creature turned from the Man towards its assailant. Grabbing his sword Geralt turned and took another precise swing, slashing the torso of the Bruxa. She screamed again causing Geralt to fall to his knees the sound almost piercing his eardrums this time. He just needed to get close enough to stab her through the chest Geralt thought, as the Bruxa jumped on him trying to tear his armour with its good talon. Reaching for his sword Geralt realised it was too far away. He struggled with the Bruxa trying to gain control as the creature looked like it was going for his neck.
Julia sat up in bed in a sweat, she had seen in her dream Geralt fighting with a dark creature. It had him pinned on the ground ready to strike. Ciri also sat up sensing Julia in distress and having also had a bad dream about Geralt. Panting Julia shared her dream, Ciri with surprise confirmed she had also dreamt the same. Julia trying to think what this could mean said "Ciri, we can't do much from here, but will you pray with me. It is all we can do for him" tears running down her cheeks Ciri nodded to Julia and together they held hands. Shutting her eyes Julia spoke with urgency "Unnamed God, we urgently seek your help, please send your angels to assist Geralt. Send them to his aid. We ask for his deliverance from this dark creature" as she spoke Ciri turned to her, her eyes turning a strange colour and she spoke with a different voice. "I hear you, child, do not fear" at that Ciri fainted into Julia's arms.
Geralt was desperate to get his sword or to loosen his hand enough to get his small dagger from its hidden place in his armour. When he thought all was lost and the creature was going to rip into his neck it looked up. Screamed at something in the trees, whatever had distracted the creature it gave him the advantage. He was able to get his silver dagger and plunge it into the Bruxa's chest. Hearing a final scream from the dark creature it fell to its side no breath left in its lungs.
Geralt assessed his wounds. The creature's talons had connected with his skin on his leg and the side of his neck. However, nothing that would not heal. He looked around and found the young man curled up in a ball hidden behind a tree. Kneeling down he spoke softly and with kindness "its ok, the creature is no more." Placing a hand on the young man's shoulders he turned and looked up. Fear emanated from his eyes. "Come", helping the young man up the two of them walked back to the creature. Geralt needing to complete the job got some matches out from his bag and lit the creature alight. Looking around he saw the talon laying on the ground collecting it as proof he and the young man headed back to the Village.
Nial and Anna met him at the door to their cottage, seeing the young man Anna took him inside to warm him up. Nial saw the talon in Geralt's hand and uncharacteristically started to cry. Not sure what to do with the emotions of the man Geralt dropped the talon and awkwardly believing this is what Julia would have done, gave the man a side hug. He comforted Nial until the man had stopped his weeping, and drew him into the house.
The following day Geralt was taken by Nial to meet the alderman of the town. He was a burly man with a full mop of curly hair hidden under a funny tall hat. He greeted Geralt with a warm handshake and a big smile "Thank you Witcher for riding us of this terrible creature. Here is 3,000 Oren as thanks for your work" Geralt went to refuse payment as Julia had said they didn't need it. However, at the last moment, he had a thought, Geralt took the bag with thanks and turning to Nial said "Do you have a jeweler in town?" a smile crossing his face.
By lunchtime, Geralt had visited the local Jeweler and found exactly what he wanted. With the rest of the Oren, he bought provisions for the way home. With what was left he went to give it to Nial as a blessing to his family. Nial's face burned "no I can't take this Geralt, that's for your family." Geralt knowing this is what Julia would have wanted him to do put the bag in Nial's hand. "Please take it as a blessing from my house to yours" at this Anna gave Geralt a hug. They waved him and Rose off as he began his journey home, home to his family.
