Let me start by saying that I fully support the exploration of the untapped “prairie demons” genre. If it’s not a thing, it needs to be a thing. This week’s #filmfriday is The Wind (2018), a slow burning horror film that digs into the bleak, unsettling atmospheres of the desolate western frontier and its harrowing effects on the human mind. Although it possesses many horror motifs we’ve seen before, the film gives them an artistic delivery that simmers through isolation, abandonment (emotional and physical), and the classic question “are the demons real or are they just in my head?” I think it’s best to go into this one knowing very little about the plot, but I will say it sets up some unique parallels between triggering situations vs. how we handle and react to them— the outside demons and how they give birth to the demons inside. While the movie didn’t punch quite as hard as I was hoping, it still left an impression and I thought about it for days afterwards. I have a weak spot for American frontier films as well as dazzling cinematography, so I really enjoyed this movie. Extra points because some of the ambience reminded me of The Witch and that is always welcome in my book. 🎞 #thewind #thewind2018 #prairiedemons https://www.instagram.com/p/CAgENcWprQZ/?igshid=5gmju17bxdzg
