Once More to See You Chapter 4
Yeyyyyy I'm actually popping these out like crazy lol. Anyways this is chapter 4 of OMSY, we're getting into the good stuff! This is crossposted on Ao3 and ff.net! Here's a sneak peek :)
Amy was the second mobian Tails had met that was kind to him. And she was the first mobian who ever said she loved him.
Tails first met Amy when she was still wearing her little green tutu and following Sonic around with credit from her mysteriously accurate fortune cards, and when he was still a young child. He doesn’t really remember what his first impression of her was, since he was so young, but if he racks his brain, he can muster up his first memory of her not even being a visual, but the feeling of her warm hug.
Sonic was never the soggy touchy-feely type that Amy always portrayed herself as. The most physical touch Tails ever got from him was a high five or the occasional side-hug, which he only started to do more after Sonic Forces, for inevitable reasons. Being imprisoned on the moon for six months would make anyone crave their loved one’s affection. He has no recollection on how he came to be, no memory of his mother, or his biological family. For all he knows, his life started when Sonic found him and fostered his genius brain by handing over the plane he had made to Tails. Back then, Sonic didn’t even talk, much less hug, or participate in emotional physical expression.
Amy was the first person that ever hugged him. The feeling was so foreign to Tails that he thought she was some alien from outer space. Sonic was never that loud, nor was he ever that sentimental, Amy was like a cold case to him. Sonic was also quite predictable to him, he knew his personality and the way he behaves towards his friends. And since Sonic was mute back then, reading his actions became a habit Tails never really grew out of. Amy, on the other hand, puzzled him to no end. Every time he had an observation of she way she acts the next day she would do the exact opposite. She wore her heart so low on her sleeve from the second they met that Tails couldn’t think of Amy ever being reserved or quiet.
She was loud, she was emotional, and the way she showed it was physical. Tails never even knew what love even was. Surely, he had no idea he could feel it. But the first time Amy wrapped her little arms around his stubby body he knew he really liked whatever foreign feelings that doting action erupted. It was warm, and cozy, and it made him feel like home. But he didn’t have a home, he never did. He would adventure around the world with Sonic and that was his home, Sonic. But Amy’s embrace felt like a place, a place where he is welcomed to belong and go back to whenever he wanted.
Tails had no mother. He had no female figure in his life that would fit that role. He had never even met a girl before Amy. He didn’t even know what affection was until Amy.
She was never afraid to hide how nervous she gets when Tails goes out to battle, or when she leaves for a Restoration Conference and Tails is left alone in the workshop, or even when she calls in to tell him she won’t be dropping lunch over that day. Amy didn’t fit the role as his mother, or a sister. It was something else, something only they understood. It surely wasn’t romantic. It was a deeper connection than nuclear family relations. They were family, no labels on it.
Sonic was gone most of day, or even for weeks to months with no word. And Amy hated being alone, everyone knew that. But what she hated more was knowing someone else was alone, especially when ‘someone else’ is Tails. She never hid the fact that she loved doting on him and keeping him happy, even if it irritated him when he was working when she scolded him for leaving his food cold. The time they spent together was constant until Amy took over the Restoration, and suddenly Amy’s time was prioritized for everyone and not him.
Tails would be lying if he said he didn’t hate it. He missed Amy’s lunches, the food she would make especially for him when she knew he was working hard, the messes he would make and her patient cleaning, that voice she used when she would coax him to bed and out of the workshop. He was always prioritized first, was he wrong to have loved it? He had taken over her guest room at some point and she never complained, she’s dropped hours of work just to give him company because she knew he needed it. And as soon as she took over HQ he was just supposed to be ok with it?
But Amy was a force of nature. You never had to tell her anything; she just knew.
So there came Tails’ monthly ‘Amy Day,’ where Amy would give Tails her entire day from start to finish for the entire month. Everyone in Restoration knew about it because no matter what the deal was, at least someone is dying, Amy’s communicator will not be received until the next day. Tails won’t say he wasn’t smug over the fact he had a whole day with just Amy, the leader of the Resistance, and Sonic didn’t! The guy she announced to the world she loved every second she had the chance. He also won’t way he didn’t hold a smug face when Sonic found out about their day and sulked for a whole week.
Amy cared, and Amy loved. That’s just the way it’s always been. It’s always been her taking care of all of them, making sure they all rest, they eat, they’re healthy. It’s an unspoken rule that whoever gets sick gets Amy doting level 100, but no one ever complains. Tails can’t even remember the last time Amy got the flu, for the longest time he was under the impression that she was just immune to every virus in the world. But after she became gone, he started to think she just never showed up to the workshop when she was sick, and just stayed at her cottage silently until she recovered.
