What's your thoughts on artists taking commissions and having online shops for their art vs payment (or the lack of it lol) for fanfics? I feel like there is a fan culture of fans wanting to pay for good art or get it on a shirt or phone case; and yet fans expect free fic even though it can take months to write? I've got so many mixed thoughts on this and you're always so articulate and I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
Oh, I have multiple thoughts on this!
First of all, people try to get art for free, too. Not necessarily on products like phone cases, but they’ll try to commission artists for icons and banners and whatnot without being willing to pay them.
But artist do have an easier time, because they are allowed to charge. Fanfic writers cannot legally charge for their work. That disparity leads to the general impression that art has monetary value while fanfic does not. And that makes it hard for authors to even do things like a tip jar, which skirts around the idea of payment for a product and turns it into thanks for a service.
So, let’s talk about the effort that goes into writing fanfic for a moment.
Right now, I’m working on the next chapter of Under Cover of Darkness. I actually started the process back in August, when I spent a few hours outlining how I want the rest of the story to go. I’d write down a few notes, come to a tricky spot and think for a bit, work my way around it, and keep going until I came to the next tricky spot. Sometimes I asked for outside opinions.
Then I started writing the actual draft on Tuesday. Every night since then, I’ve spent 2-3 hours working on this story. One night had to spend all the time figuring out a solution to a problem that had occurred to me when I was outlining. Plus, I’m constantly editing and polishing the earlier bits to keep them in line with changes that are made and to tweak poorly written sentences.
By the time I post this chapter on Tuesday, I will easily have spent over 15 hours--probably closer to 20--making sure it’s as good as I can get it. That’s a lot of time and effort poured into something that I will turn around and post online for free. And since it’s chapter 6 of an ongoing story, you have to also factor in the time I’ve spent working on previous chapters, because of course that was technically planning work on this chapter.
I don’t mind that I can’t charge for fanfic, because I understand the copyright concerns. I actually prefer to provide it for free, to everyone, instead of only to those who can afford it. (Disclaimer: yes, artists post lots of work for free too.)
What I mind is the capitalist attitude that only things I’ve paid for have value. I mind the culture that says I’m begging or demanding or think too highly of myself when I post a link to my ko-fi.
And the only way we’re going to make it culturally acceptable for authors to have a tip jar is if authors start doing it more often. To that end...
