Book Review- The Year of Less By Cait Flanders Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Year of Less is Cait Flanders's story of how she transformed her life in a year by going on a shopping band and decluttering. The story spans a few years in which she talks about how she got to this place and her personal and work struggles. This mini-memoir regarding personal finance was incredibly interesting with great takeaways on how to improve your financial situation. While hers may seem extreme (only buying essentials if it was on her approved items list, replacing something only if it broke and then only if it was a necessity), it was a great experiment in the frivolous consumerism many of us experience today. After her year of less, she went on to count how many personal items she went through in a year to add more data to her research. Though she was past the stockpiling part of her life, she only went through two bottles of shampoo in a year. It put a lot into perspective how easy it is to get sucked into advertisements and purchase *cute* items that never seem to look the same way in your home as they do in the store. In the end, a lot of financial stress stems from not being mindful of our habits. Could we take the trip if we hadn't ordered Doordash for a few months? Would buying excess items we thought we needed to be a certain way bring us happiness? I loved this and it was a great reminder in being mindful, structuring life to avoid temptations, and to question yourself before buying something if you don't need it. 365 days without shopping
Day 7 of 365
At the end of last year I completed the book “The year of less” by Cait Flanders. What started out as a challenge to herself not to spend unnecessary money, turned out to be a life altering experiment that not only changed her perspective around material items, but also enhanced her outlook on life. It was an inspiring and enjoyable read.
I’ve found that over the last several years, I drowned myself in material items either out of illegitimate ideas that I “needed” the items, deep down thinking the items would enhance me in some way, or frankly because I thought they would make me happy. I’m someone who can justify any purchase and convince you of my reasoning.
As I enter 2021, after the unique experiences that 2020 brought us, I come realizing I no longer recognize much of myself. Through broken relationships, disappointments, and grief I’ve managed to loose sight of the things that truly brought me joy ( if I honestly ever knew them at all). While I don’t believe in the “New year, new me” mentality, I believe that everyday we are on this planet is a chance to cherish the people we care about and begin anew in areas we aren’t happy with. By being complacent for so long, I was making a choice to not make a choice. I was choosing to remain in the same place because the fear of changing, and not achieving a successful outcome, was more pain than I was willing to risk.
I’ll be going 365 without spending to stop drowning my woes in new handbags and shoes, and address my feelings head on to get back to a healthier mindset. We don’t NEED all the things we convince ourselves to buy and at many points in my life I’ve felt suffocated by owning all the items I have. I’m looking forward to documenting this journey so that I can look back and see how far I came.
In the book Cait documents a list of approved items to purchase, inventories all of her belongings, and tracks the amount of income saved. I will be doing the same in the coming days and post to hold myself accountable. Feel free to join in with me at any time.

Hmmmm... Depends on your mood reading this one!
Not what I had expected this book to be and not what I had purchased it for but still read it to see how it developed and sharing as it may indeed be a great read for some people. New York Times reviews among a few is what made me select it but it is not at all what I have perceived it to be. This is a New York Times Best Seller which I personally disagree with but there you go.
At a time when I was re-assessing what was financially important to me I recognized that I wasted alot on very short-term things in my life that I did not need and could live without, be it fashion/clothing, daily coffee’s or subscriptions that I no longer required. I had also become quite complacent at regularly reviewing household fundamentals like gas/ electricity, motor insurance and so on. I had made a decision that there was plenty I needed to cut out from my monthly expenditure and basically a de-clutter was required.
This book does not address this type of mindset despite the title! This book is about a person’s personal struggle with addiction of various sorts from alcohol to online shopping and how she spent a year reducing all of her debt and addictive habits. I guess it gets there in the end but I had thought it was about support people who may be trying to de-clutter their lives but this is more about breaking addictions. It is of course inter-linked but there was little by way of detailing support for others vs just their story.
