Nominated for the discovery award at this years Recontres d'Arles photography festival, this journey down The Yellow River in China blew me away...
This great river cuts through vast swathes of wilderness, either urbanised or natural. It's this conflict or contrast which for me the whole project seems to meditate on. Highlighting the relationship between this ambitious and complex people and the ancient land that both lies merciless and offers it's own challenges to a seemingly ruthless & unquenchable thirst for modernisation & expansion.
I find it fascinating that this could easily be the western reaction to these images. Our view clouded as if by the same haze that consumes these each photo. Filtering the sun. Unable revel in the almost Hopper-esque landscapes and the genuine beauty of the moments captured.
