"Gay, Proud And Angry -- Is Alcohol For Straight People Only?" Peter Tatchell (foreground) and other members of the Gay Liberation Front-UK, London School of Economics, October 6, 1971. The United Kingdom chapter of the Gay Liberation Front, founded in London in 1970 by pioneers including Bob Mellors, Aubrey Walter, and Peter Tatchell, brought the power of direct action campaigns on behalf of LGBTs to Europe. In 1971, the GLF-UK published its manifesto, which read, in part: "We do not intend to ask for anything. We intend to stand firm and assert our basic rights. If this involves violence, it will not be we who initiate this, but those who attempt to stand in our way to freedom." As with the Gay Liberation Front in the United States, ideological differences splintered the group in Great Britain, leading to the formation of a number of important groups--including the Lesbian Avengers, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Dykes and Faggots Together, Queer Nation, and OutRage!--that more directly served subcommunities. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #gay #bi #trans #lesbian #pride #worldwidepride #glf #theystoodup #gayproudandangry (at The London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE)
