for the ask game: what does their victor crown look like and what is their worst coping mechanism

In my hcs, Victor crowns are always fashioned out of gold to look like laurel wreaths, but they vary in design from year to year depending on the tributes!! Here are two variations for my Victor ocs Laine (D8) and Harper (D6). Laine's would be smaller, softer, and a bit less gaudy than usual. It'd be made to fit around the back of her head, so as to not distract from the veil she's already wearing. It also makes me giggle but I imagine the crowns weren't too impressive a few years after Haymitch's games... the Capitol blew its budget on the Second Quell. Harper's would be more wild and unruly, since the violence of his Games was his main draw as a Victor. In terms of worst coping mechanisms, I imagine Laine would have a hard time after her Games due to the guilt of losing her district partner. She'd feel like a burden on the loved ones she has left, and she'd feel awful that she can't be a mentor to future tributes because of her disability. I don't think she'd indulge in super out-of-control coping mechanisms, but she'd sometimes engage in self harm in small ways, like letting a needle slip while she's stitching. Harper would be a hot mess. His whole thing is he vows to make it back home so he can marry a close friend (with benefits) that he accidentally got pregnant. He didn't love her, but, more than anything, he has a strong sense of responsibility, so he felt the need to take care of her and their baby, and she agreed. They could make it work. But then he gets reaped. He promises that when—not if—he gets back, he'll marry her. He fights the whole way through, he's absolutely merciless in the arena because he only keeps his mind on coming back home. Among his kills, he eliminates the youngest girl in the arena and butchers the two District 2 tributes at the end. Then when he comes home, she's understandably disgusted and doesn't want anything to do with him. So after the purpose that carried him through the Games crumbles before his eyes, Harper's forced to face all of the atrocities he committed in the arena, and he spirals into a deep depression. He indulges in alcohol and drugs (not to haymitch levels), but another bad coping mechanism he'd have is occasionally stalking his ex friend. It wouldn't be out of resentment or anything, but rather because he's lonely and curious about his kid (and kind of paranoid about their safety). He's just accidentally mirroring his behavior in the arena. Whoops. Sometimes he'd leave money on their doorstep.

That The Hunger Games series can only either be a love story or stand true to its political themes.

It’s both. It can be both.

The Hunger Games is a love story because the story highlights how love is political.

I think the trend of looking down on romance books and love stories was a catalyst to this. Readers want The Hunger Games to be different to the likes of Twilight so it can be respected, valued and not ridiculed for being a YA book with a love triangle.

But you can’t take away the love story aspects of the series without gutting it. So if you want The Hunger Games to be respected then you can’t look down on other romance stories.

I do think Katniss had some romantic attraction to G*le (nowhere near what she felt for Peeta after she started to fall for him though) but the dead giveaway for how G*le was more of a familial/loyalty love and Peeta was a romantic/soulmate type love was the fact that Katniss always grouped G*le with her mother and Prim when she talked about love in her life whereas she always, always talked about Peeta in his own category of her love

To me it was less that Katniss felt romantic attraction toward Gale, and more like she believed she could feel attracted to Gale in that way.

Like if her life wasn't in constant danger and the games didn't exist then maybe she would love Gale. Also when Katniss "chose" Gale in Catching Fire it was out of duty and loyalty. It was a declaration like she was convincing herself. (Even then her first thoughts were something along the lines "I hope Gale doesn't remember the kiss" and she worried about Peeta getting home in a blizzard.)

I completely agree with you that Peeta was always his own separate category of love. Katniss said in Catching Fire, “I’m not used to being touched, except by Peeta or my family.” That alone told us Peeta was in a league of his own.

Loving Peeta was effortless for Katniss. She actually tried to convince herself that she didn't. She was in love with him, and by the time she expected it he was taken from her.

12: You're going to a concert and you have a spare ticket! Which caracter are you inviting to come along? And where are you going?

Here are some possibilities!

Rock concert - Haymitch: I have a longstanding headcanon Haymitch is into divorced dad rock (Nickelback comes to mind, which is also the last concert I've been to). Haymitch could be fun, however, I do not want to babysit him if he gets too drunk. But it would be a night out for him.

Eras Tour - Madge: She would be into dressing up and making bracelets. We're both quiet people but we'd vibe well. Backup options include Delly, Finnick, Peeta, or Prim. Actually, sorry Madge but I'm leaning towards Delly now.

Any sort of pop punk concert - Peeta or Johanna: Again, longstanding headcanon Peeta likes pop punk. I have both Fall Out Boy and All Time Low songs on my thg playlist for Peeta! Let him sing his heart out. And Johanna I think I'd feel safe going with!

Random band at the Hob - Katniss: She's going to be tipsy dancing her heart out anyway, might as well tag along (although there is no way Peeta is not right behind her so maybe I'm not needed). Lucy Gray is also welcome, just make sure the man visiting from the Capitol is barred entry.

And I wish I could stay anon for this (it's embarrassing) but it's ok. I agree fully with you. Also this is kinda unrelated but regarding Lenore Dove. I agree with what you said about her and well, I like to imagine myself in her place instead. Aka, me x Haymitch lol

I'm always glad to find people who agree on this! It's such an unpopular opinion in the fandom but she is so annoying to me. Her brand of rebellion is, ultimately, useless, and dangerous to all. She appears so much more frequently in Haymitch's thoughts than his own family, which I will never not be mad about. And him descending into grief because of her death cheapens his character so much more, imo — he didn't do that because he lost his family or because he lost all his allies or because he had killed people in the arena or because he had been humiliated and treated like a pet by the capitol in the worst ways or because he now has to forever keep delivering two children to their deaths each year. Nope. He grieves because of Lenore Dove.

And making her covey and then making her the main love interest of the book, and then making her related to Burdock — it brings back the chosen one trope that the author had so neatly avoided in the original trilogy. Just why. Since I first read the book, I've only grown to dislike her more and more tbh.

omg for the WIP thing, please share something from keeping up with the rebels - what a brilliant idea!

Did a long explanation in the previous one✨ and it's 1am so I don't feel like writing a scene rn (I might share one later🤸‍♀️), but I can give you like a run down of our characters. I want to keep it as simple as possible, so everyone had their own little like main trait.

Katniss - oblivious. Miss girl is the face of the revolution, she doesn't have time to pay attention to everything else going on. At the same time.... It's remarkable the stuff this girl hasn't picked up on. Katniss is us in this fic, we mainly discover things along with her

Peeta - all knowing. Yes I know this is ironic, considering everything, but I feel like he sometimes gets these nuggets of memories that make Katniss go "are those Capitol memories or Peeta memories??". Cus why would the Capitol give Peeta a memory of Haymitch and Effie making out on the penthouse couch?

Finnick - leader. Finnick is our mystery squad Fred. He has the white board, the cork board, the chalk board, and the red thread to connect them all. He leads the investigations.

Annie - romantic. Now before y'all start with your fancy words for stuff and concepts I don't understand, let me explain myself. I think after everything Annie has been through, she just wants there to be love and happiness around her, and there is nothing wrong with that. She's still a badass strong willed girl, she's just also a hopeless romantic. She thinks everyone is in love, and she's a serial shipper. Did everyone laugh when she suggested Heavenscoin? Yes. Did everyone have to pay up when they discovered it was true? Also yes.

Johanna - drama. Miss girl needs to be entertained. She needs something to happen at every waking moment, and if nothings happening she will make something happen. She loves the gossip, and she's not afraid to go to extreme lengths to find it. She's also the "bad cop" to Finnicks "good cop" whenever they're interrogating someone.

Gale - clueless. He doesn't know how he ended up in this group, he doesn't know if he should even be there, and he certainly doesn't know what the hell is going on. Ever.

Haymitch and Effie - old married couple energy. Yes I know that isn't a trait. No I don't care. They're not hiding their relationship at all at this point, but they're not exactly showing it off either. They do however get super confused when the mockingkids start acting weird around them....

I have more, but these are the clearest ones and also the most important ones. Also I wanna go to bed, so no more for today✨🤸‍♀️🩷
