Thick and Yellow Toenails? Here’s What It Means
Thick, yellow toenails are one of the most common complaints as people age. Many assume it’s simply part of growing older — but the truth is, it can be a sign of something more. Changes in nail color, thickness, or shape often reflect what’s going on beneath the surface.
Yellow toenails can be caused by a fungal infection (onychomycosis), where the nail becomes discolored, brittle, and sometimes painful. However, other factors like psoriasis, poor circulation, or long-term use of nail polish can also change your nail’s appearance. Aging toenails naturally grow slower and may retain pigment from past polishes or medications.
If you notice persistent discoloration, consider soaking your feet in warm water mixed with apple cider vinegar or applying diluted tea tree oil — both known for their antifungal properties. Always keep your nails trimmed, and wear breathable footwear.
