Me at FCBD yesterday cosplaying as (casual-ish) Abridged Bakura. Apart from the 5.50am wake up, was a pretty awesome day :D Got to hang out with @trash-a-nator, which was the main highlight~ We’ll have to get some pictures together next time! (My bad for forgetting >v>“ )

Marik and Bakura Go  to Censored Town: Visual Novel - Review

A few days ago @obeymyshinyrod​ offered to give me a slightly advanced copy of the visual novel in exchange for a review, and I happily obliged.

Here's my spoiler-free, tl;dr version: I was screaming from the first line, and that was pretty much my experience through the whole thing. I'd started playing at midnight, with the intent to stop around 1 or 2am, and play the rest in the morning - yet I stayed up to marathon it until about 3.30am. That's how good it is, and if you're still on the fence about pledging for it, hopefully this review will convince you. (A far more in-depth review and somewhat-censored spoiler images are available under the cut to save space, and in case anyone wants no spoilers.)

Starting with the art - it’s freaking magnificent! The daytime scenes/splash images are so bright and colourful - all the artists did a fantastic job with creating immersive scenes, emotive faces, just, askskdsjsla. It was so good, and seeing everyone’s styles kind of bounce off each other while still having their own distinct flair was a really nice touch. The sprites for dialogue were also awesome - the blinking and the way they moved, even though they were mostly still images, those little touches really brought them to life (like the way Bakura drags Marik away from the waterhole in chapter five). Shout out to Kamy as well for those adorable chibis and the dvd cover at the end - perfect way to finish the novel! I mean, look at some of these images!

THE MUSIC. OH MAN THE MUSIC FOR THIS GAME IS SUPERB. And I do not caps in semi-professional reviews very often, but this is well deserving of it. The music during the Melvin Flashback is hauntingly ethereal (Melvin’s sprites during that scene were creepy and gorgeous as well); and the record scratch in chapter five- I’m not going to tell you exactly where because spoilers - was fucking hilarious and perfectly placed. All of it’s brilliant, of course (I’m a sucker for good instrumentals), but those were some of my highlights. But by far my favourite song is in this scene.

The music during it, alongside Martin’s voice acting of Bakura, the art, and the actual fanfic, had me wiping tears from my eyes (it helped that I hadn't reread the original fic in long enough that I'd completely forgotten Marik nearly died). I would have pledged the money for that scene alone, tbh. My only wish would have been to have audio of Bakura screaming at the end, when he hits Marik’s chest, but that’s my personal opinion, and the thump of Bakura’s fist pretty much does the job anyway (Maybe I just love suffering ehehe...).

The only other complaint I had with it was that, for some stupid reason, I thought the numbers at the top of the save page were actually chapter numbers for skipping through, and you could go to each one as you unlocked them (in my defence there are eight chapters), rather than eight other pages of save files. So if you’re reading this and haven’t played yet, don’t be afraid to save regularly and especially at the beginning of each chapter for convenience. But that complaint’s more my own human error than any fault of the game. Seriously, this is worth the money, and if you can afford to pledge (I think this month is any amount, and after it you have to pledge $5? Best to check with someone though) and you’re over the age of 18, I would definitely recommend this game!

If you want to pledge and your concerns are of the "I don't want to be automatically charged multiple times" or "I'm over the age of 18 but I don't want it showing up on my bank statement because my parents will see" variety, here are some options: - Remember that what shows up on your bank statement is going to be something about Patreon and Littlekuriboh, and there'll be no mention of the game, so chances are you can bluff your way past your parents if you have to. - Buy a prepaid debit card to use. You're guaranteed to not be charged over the amount you've put on the card if (for whatever reason) you forget to unpledge. In Australia, prepaid visa debit cards are available at Post Offices, and prepaid mastercards used to be sold at Woolworths, although I haven't seen them available for a while. (This is how I’m paying for my subscription) - Sending money to your PayPal balance first should keep it off your bank statement.

Marik and Bakura, 3.20pm, 162 km to destination. GPS estimates arrival at 4.30ish, 13 hours on the road. Tired, slept a lot and didn’t have much to photograph through the day, but doing pretty well.
