We woke up this morning and started looking for the next stone again. Eventually, after several hours of wandering around in the snow casting detection spells, we found another trapdoor similar to the last one. We opened the lid and climbed in and found another metal tunnel similar to the other one.
As we were walking down the tunnel we heard someone chanting, and we assumed the worst. That it was whoever had made the stones and that they were starting the ritual.
We rounded the corner and saw a silver dragonborn in white robes with runes painted onto their skin with one hand on a now glowing rune-stone, surrounded by three suits of animated armor. When they saw us they screamed at us to get out and threw up a wall of ice that almost froze all of us. Rob went into a fury and laid into the wall, broke it down, and then we all charged in against a wizard who was at least powerful enough to cast Wall of Ice and at least competent enough to operate a summoning spell of world-shaking proportions.
Maybe not our smartest move.
Rob focused on smashing the suits of armor, Chandra charged in and started swinging at the wizard while Leroy and I cast ranged spells and focused on counterspelling everything they tried to do. They tried to cast Cone of Cold, Ice Storm, Freezing Sphere, a lot of cold spells. Very thematic wizard.
We thought we had them when Rob finished off the last of the suits of armor and started swinging at the mage, but then they pulled out a glass sphere, threw it on the ground, and a huge ice elemental appeared and knocked Chandra off her feet and almost froze Leroy. I managed to hit it with four direct Scorching Ray beams, but by the time we had the elemental under control the wizard had disappeared.
We grabbed the rune stone, and we’re on our way back to the teleportation circle, currently nursing our wounds in the tiny hut.
