Happy Coming Out Day. (Celebrating this with one of my backstage #ThingsIKnowToBeTrue looks - this is the one that I changed into right after my character comes out to her family, which was one of my favorite scenes to act, ever.) Coming out is a long, endless, sometimes excruciating process. It doesn’t happen just once - it happens every time you’re misgendered, every time someone assumes your orientation from what your partner looks like, every time you have to explain why you’re so angry and passionate about queer justice. Hopefully you find yourself in spaces where it’s not too painful. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it’s easier to just let it go, not correct people, because you’re scared of being “inappropriate” or “intense.” I first came out as pansexual when I was 14, but I knew from a much earlier age that I wasn’t straight, or cisgender for that matter. I’ve been out as various permutations of trans/genderqueer since I was about 18. Nowadays I identify as non-binary and genderqueer, bisexual, and lesbian/sapphic. I guess the only other thing to “come out” as is non-monogamous! Each of these terms denote a different aspect of my life, how I view the world, and how I love - and they’re important to me. I hope that in my visibility, I can be a role model and source of support for queer students who look up to me and other people who are finding themselves. ❤️ #comingoutday #queer #bisexual #lesbian #nonbinary #genderqueer #transmasculine #pride https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlMfstp4MS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
We close “Things I Know To Be True” today. Frankly, I’m not ready. I could keep being a member of this family until the end of time. This is the longest run of a show I’ve ever done, and being able to digest and revisit this character gave me the invaluable opportunity to reflect and grow far more than I had in the past. This is an extraordinarily hard project to let go, but I will carry its gifts with me to my future career. To everyone - my wonderfully talented fellow actors, who have become a true family with me backstage and on stage, the inimitable @jessi_may_stevenson who made me feel like a million bucks with her initial offer of the role and is THE best director I’ve ever worked with, to our amazing crew who are the kindest people and support us every step of the way, to all the friends who have come out to see the show. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so grateful. My cup is so full it’s overflowing. ❤️❤️❤️ #closing #thingsiknowtobetrue #santapaulatheatercenter #theatre #livetheatre #contemporarytheatre @sptheatercenter (at Santa Paula Theater Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb5eijkJS_C/?utm_medium=tumblr

My next show opens in two weekends! “Things I Know To Be True,” by Andrew Bovell - my first contemporary play and first time at the Santa Paula Theatre Center! Brilliantly directed by @jessi_may_stevenson (with poster and scenic art by her talented sister @amylynnstev) and featuring some of the best actors with whom I’ve ever shared the stage - this is not one to miss. I won’t give too many details about my character or their arc, but it’s been a fascinating process so far. And you have six weeks to see it - we open February 25 and run til April 3!
