Tonight’s movie was Kahil Gibran’s The Prophet. A young girl that hasn’t spoken since the death of her father (a common ailment, in fiction at least) tags along as her mother goes to clean the home of a political prisoner under house arrest. The girl befriends the man on the same day he is told he will get his freedom. Naturally the girl tags along for this long walk as the man stops frequently to launch into preachy poetic lectures to ridiculously awestruck people. These sections feature gorgeous animation in a variety of styles to illustrate his droning. Unfortunately his cult like following dies not go over well with the murderously oppressive powers that be, so they arrange to shoot him before I could. Not to worry, his “work” will live on to the wonder of those unable to think for themselves in need of a guru.
Have you guessed I’m not really into the whole philosopher/preacher/prophet/guru/jedi master/wise man/fortune cookie/poet thing??? Look, it isn’t that people like that can’t have amazing ideas that contain truths. I can really enjoy the way some of these folks string words together or sum up concepts. But despite the occassional fresh way of considering something, they usually are simply stating the obvious, just really pretty like. Too often they are reducing the infinate spectrum of existance to simple primary colors, condensing beyond usefulness as if trying to shrink the universe to a speck of dust. Other times they are simply talking complete bunk, maybe pretty or feel good, but still utter bunk. They seem to have inflated egos, pride in knowing more than others and want to continually prove it, even in areas where their ideas are mere hollow shells. It isn’t like teaching, but more like dictating, decreeing that they have this special knowledge of how the world works and life should be lived. They know “the way” or “the truth”, they “see what others cannot”, they are the chosen ones.
BULL!!! (Please replace with a stronger word)
You know what, do not be awed by people simply because they have spared a moment to contemplate. Don’t go around searching for someone to tell you The Way. Don’t expect anyone, ever, to have all the answers. If anyone, ever, says they have all the solutions just walk away. No, run. You need someone to teach you the facts of how the universe works, also known as science BTW, but you do NOT need someone to teach you how to feel about these things! All you need is an open and curious mind coupled with some capacity for empathy. Listen to everything and everyone. Watch everything. Try to understand the world around you. Just try to understand on your own. Think for yourself! Be your own damn philosopher!!!!
Never, ever tell me how to think! Never, ever tell me how to feel! My mind and heart are my own, to find my own path through my life. And if I ever came up with some useful way of looking at things, I would NEVER want people in awe of my insight. I want no worshipers bowing at my feet, just as I will NEVER bow to anyone!
Ok, calm down Stephanie. You don’t have to join the cult or start reblogging inspirational bullshit quotes.
So, yeah....I really got irked at the way everyone got all wide eyed as this guy said the equivallent of water is wet and the sun will blind you if you stare into it too long. Morons. I don’t actually disagree with many of the things he said, inspite of the flowery way he said them. Of course flowery is what gets you the groupies. The bit where his writing that got him arrested is quoted back to him and he is given the choice to live by denouncing his words or death by staying true to himself I DID respect him. That I liked a lot. Telling idiots the obvious in how to live, speaking in a self important tones to the reward of adoration, made me angry. Having the guts to speak unpopular ideas to power, being willing to face death rather than compromise your truth, THAT is what is heroic. That is what should earn awe!
Nice animation though.....
