We used to rule the rice industry in the world in the 60’s. In fact, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) was founded and headquartered in Los Banos, Laguna in the 60’s. The phenomenon was then known as the “Green Revolution.” The Philippines was one of the leading rice exporters in the world in the 60’s and 70’s, in a twist of fate, we are now the number one rice importer in the world. Something has gone wrong with our system. And the sad thing is, Thailand and Vietnam are now the number one and two rice exporters in the world respectively.
