I know there was so much the episode didn’t show, but one thing my brain is flailing over is how little we saw of the post-prison-marriage dynamic. And I think (hope!) it was intentional, because the majority of the flashbacks were in Robert’s pov and as of now, Robert thinks he’s the only one lying. He doesn’t know the stabbing was self inflicted, he doesn’t know Kev isn’t terminal, and that will for sure be colouring his own memories etc.

We went from a very enthusiastic Robert (with a clear drive to appeal and potentially get out….and like Faith says, there’s no stopping him when he puts his mind to something) ….

….To a Robert riddled with guilt (“this is all my fault I’m so sorry”) who thinks by virtue of existing, he’s put Kev in danger. Kev says he was attacked because of Jez (because of Robert) and Robert wasn’t there so he surely thinks if he hadn’t been seeing his lawyer and trying to leave, Kev wouldn’t have been hurt. That positive drive to leave (which we saw right up until the second he saw Kev lying in his own blood) is gone, and the hesitation he shows in responding to Kev’s proposal is him trying to wrestle with that desire to leave vs his guilt that he’s to blame for this and he owes it to Kev to stay. He goes from thinking he might have something to celebrate (in getting released) and leaving his lawyer’s meeting with a spring in his step, to thinking actually maybe the evidence wasn’t good enough after all and why should he even bother?

And THEN the next time we see him he’s wearing his hair in a way we’ve never seen before, but that is pointedly very similar to Kev’s slick-back hairstyle, effectively visualising that this is Kev’s husband now. He’s not thinking about getting out because he’s resigned himself to being in this isolated bubble with his prison husband—stuck in the purgatory he thinks he deserves to atone for his sins whilst assuming everyone is better off with him locked up.

But THEN after Faith has reminded him that he loves Aaron, and has told him that everything in the outside world isn’t sunshine and rainbows, we see Robert’s hairstyle revert to his norm, despite still being married to Kev. He’s looking at the taped up photograph of Aaron and Seb, and he’s been completely hiding the fact that he’s been appealing for quite some time…!

If we assume Robert and Kev were more open about their r’ship status in prison, and the potential ramifications of that from Jez and co. that might have required a more violent part of Kev to appear as he continued to defend himself and Robert—by not showing us that darker side of Kev that we’ve seen hints of (threatening Aaron, Liam, Mack and Ross; beating up his old “friend” over the £10k; how quick he was to almost fight Matty; his temper when Robert wasn’t wearing the watch; his impulsive behaviour with stabbing himself, lying, short notice vow renewal, as well as what we’ve been told by Robert as fact that he’s to be feared, and that he doesn’t take no for an answer…) I wonder if that’s the show holding back on purpose because we ARE going to see that darker side of Kev in the present-day instead, especially when he finds out about the robron of it all…..!

And I think that’s going to really test (and maybe even disprove!?) the statement we got in the articles about Kev hurting other people, but not Robert 🤔😱😎

I still find it really funny that the creators of Arcane really went “ah yes, this handsome stereotypical man but with a heart of gold, the fan girls are gonna love this” and then all of the fan girls immediately start swooning for the sickly man and the evil twink, both of which are against most men’s beauty standards. i think the thing about lando that i like most is that he's strong not because he's hard and stoic, but rather because he is soft and openly self-critical. he's still one of the most competitive people i've ever seen, but he's honest with everyone, especially himself. he has weaknesses (everyone does) but he doesn't seek to hide that or ignore it, rather he looks directly at it. he's determined to improve, so he'll admit and go toward the obstacle rather than avoid it. he doesn't swagger blindly into the future certain of success, he'll believe he can when he's proved to himself that he can. he's willing to work with hope but without expectation, openly imperfect but trying, and you can see his positive trajectory through his career. it works for him, but some people don't know how to hear it.

observers like will buxton and others will witness a stumble and report feverishly on the weakness and the fault, assuming it means that he's fallen or broken forever, instead of understanding that stumbling and regaining balance is what he does while climbing up the hill towards perfection. he's far from reaching it, and he'll never actually get there, but he's in dedicated pursuit of it. people refuse to zoom out and contextualize mistakes as being part of that journey. i think even lando does do this too at times, getting myopically focused on the moment, but he has a team of people that help him get back on track, process the error, and regain perspective on how far he's come, like he's grown so much as a person and is a multiple race winner and a credible threat for the championship, despite all the loud and persistent doubt. i'd love it if media would zoom out once and awhile too.

saw a hilarious take on bo burnham’s inside in that his experience of being trapped inside during a pandemic isn’t applicable to the working class because he has the privilege of being paid to stay inside, because he can’t make jokes about self help books being delivered by drones bc he wasn’t the one packing the drones

absolutely baffling that the capacity for human empathy is so disrupted by the myopic lens of self actualization that someone can think that someone in a position of privilege is absolutely Not Allowed To Be Depressed, bc that is 1) how depression works, and 2), like 

you know that there are working class ppl who were stuck at home, the entire year? who got laid off and unemployed? and yes?? of course there are ppl who continued working thru the whole pandemic, and are still working now, but a view into one specific perspective doesn’t negate the experiences of others??? it was a baffling review. 

anyway the line “it’s 2020 and i just turned 30, i’ll give it another ten, in 2030 i’ll be 40 and then i’ll kill myself” hit pretty deep since i’ve been planning on beefing it by 45 since i was like, 9. 

it’s also so evident that the person who made that review Is Not A Creator of Anything because holy shit wild to think that people wanting acceptance and attention is an Inherently Bad Thing, as though as a child you didn’t want your parents to fucking hang your shitty art on the fridge 

the desperate want of attention is a quintessentially human thing and that’s fuckin’ fine

I can’t decide if Crowley would be spending today asleep, drinking, doomscrolling, or taking very detailed notes because humans seem to have Issues with understanding cause and effect these days.

Probably not the last one, because America’s hardly the first place to deal with this shit and we won’t be the last, half of us still just think we’re special for some reason. But anyway. Just some fun thoughts because I have to work so I can’t go back to bed myself. A nap sounds awesome right now.

Robert Ford, Westworld 2x07. 

All the efforts of science and technology to re-create the human consciousness, to copy a single human mind in all its complexity, depth, creativity, and uniqueness. And it falls so short of what nature itself, or God, if you believe that sort of thing, has itself composed. I find it fascinating that Westworld continues to both celebrate the complexity of the ‘human’ mind; with its free will, memories, personalities, decision making, darkness, and connections with others –  and at the same time it points out how weak, fragile, selfish, disgusting and utterly useless human beings really are. How wonderful and beautiful is consciousness – and yet, how poorly we humans use it. Full of potential for greatness. Full of potential for darkness. Sure, this shit is fiction, but I’m moved by the fact that consciousness is so complex and elusive, that any attempts to recreate it with accuracy are a poorly hummed melody, a broken tune that could never compare with a full orchestra. Being alive is such a glorious thing, something we could not hope to recreate. Something we should cherish and be in awe of. You are alive. No one thinks like you, has your memories, or experiences. No one and nothing can capture your essence in its completeness. A single human soul is entirely unique. 

It’s just a shame human nature makes most of us shitheads.

“bo burnham has made a significant amount of money from his art so his art has no meaning or consequence anymore” was essentially the gist and--

how do i tell this person that art is inherently meaningless because you’re the one ascribing meaning to it??????????? do you think that artists don’t deserve to be paid? that’s A Take and frankly one i entertain because i for one think a lot of complicated shit about art, and like. sure. sure. fine. art isn’t Work. art is Self Expression and just Opinions thrown into the public, art is dead and has so much meaning stripped away when it exists in a corporate, capitalist space, but guess the fuck what! unless you’re looking at literally paleolithic art, that’s all art! published works and framed paintings exist in a society!  in an economy! not a vacuum!
