Illustrator [Ai] Skills Show & Tell; Graphic 2 : Part 1.
The first thing to do when making the outlined images with colour and shading, was to find/create a reference image. I picked this cool looking rubber duck for my first of what would be two parts of the second part of the task. The main reason I picked this duck is because I thought that it could come in handy with one of my projects in another class. The way it needed to be designed fit with the style that I had in my head.
So first, I imported the image of the duck onto my artboard, as well as duplicating it off to the side as a reference for colour.
Once I did that, I created a new layer and began making the outline with the Pen tool, this was very easy for me with all the practice that I’ve had in class time.
After that was completed I created another new layer to outline the mouth and eyes. I did this on a separate layer so the paths would not get in the way of each other.
Below you can see me transferring the mouth and eyes down to the same Layer as the Duck Outline.
After all were on the same layer, I could colour them in using the reference image as a palette.
After all the colours were set out in the paths, I went again on a new layer to create some shapes for simple shading on the Duck, around its neck, and its wing.
Once those shaded areas were pathed, I shifted them onto the same layer as everything else, and arranged them so that the Outline of the duck was above them, but the solid colour was below them. This created the exact effect that I want.
Above you can see the completed image of the Rubber Duck. I am very very happy with how it turned out and I may well use it in the project for another class.
