To Much and Never Enough by Mary Trump

I'll admit it, I was curious. So, I did indeed use one of my audible credits to get this book.

It's fascinating. How 45 grew up, the cut throat family dynamics that were described provided a good amount of insight. It is clear that the author is appalled by what has come to pass during this administration.

It is also clear that she wanted to shine a light on the childhood of 45 and his siblings.

What I found most interesting weren't the things she said about 45. After all, while it was enlightening to have context for his behavior, I don't think she said anything about it that isn't already clear.

No, what I found most interesting were the telling of Freddy Trump's story. 45's older brother and the author's father.

I literally know next to nothing about the siblings and only knew that Freddy had died young, in his early 40's.

Viewed through the lens of the author, it seems that Freddy was one of the few family members who had a sense of decency and he was very much beaten down by his father. It was sad to learn that this man who had talent and interests outside his father's business ultimately was boxed into a corner and gave up on himself.

It's a bit of a trip to read this book because there is so much in the way that 45 acts now that came from his father, Fred also made sure that 45 didn't face and consequences for bad behavior or poor decisions. Something that doesn't seem to have been done for the other siblings. This really made me wonder what it is about this man that makes others want to cover for him and insulate him from the fall out of his actions?
