Asher was nervous. After having such a good day, a good previous night, he only hoped this wouldn’t be a disaster. Raine was more than excited to visit the little baby, her aunt and uncle. She was excited that she got to help cook. Rambling almost the entire way there, Asher didn’t have much time to prep Levi for whatever he was about to walk into. When they pulled into the driveway, the little girl practically jumped out of the car and ran for the door. “I think she’s excited to help make dinner.” He leaned over to kiss Levi softly. “By the way, I told my brother you’re only 30 and he just about lost it, and I give Robyn shit all the time for being older than Cole, so honestly, I wish you he best of luck tonight and whatever happens here, I’ll make it up to you when we get home.” He kissed him again, giving him a big smile in hopes to bypass everything he just said, getting out of the car and waiting for him before meeting his daughter at the door.

Robyn was gathering the things for dinner when she heard the tiny knock. “Babe I think they’re here.” She stuffed a folded up piece of cheese in her mouth as she closed the fridge with her hip. “Did he tell you anything about this dude? What do we know about this guy?” Knowing Maggie was safe in her dad’s arms, she went to open the door, gasping at Raine. “Whoa! Look at you little lady!” She picked her up to give her a squeeze, spinning half way to set her in the house. When she looked back up to see Asher and his boyfriend, her jaw dropped a little. “Well damnn Ash. Look a you pulling some serious business. You Brooks boys sure aimed out of your league. Hi! I’m his sister in law Robyn. The best sister.”

1: “Note to self: this unit is experiencing rust in the marked part, check the other LIFE units for similar rust conditions. EXT-43, please run through gyro-calibration again.”

14: “What do you do all day?”

1: “I’m doing great 14, thanks for asking.”

14: “Sure sure but like, what do you do?”

1: “Fix shit, mostly. Currently just recalibrating an EXT unit that got knocked out a bit too hard.”

14: “Is it rude if I say it’s boring?”

1: “A little.”

14: “It’s boring.”

1: “You’re the one bugging me, squirt. And good job EXT-43, confirm there’s no other internal warnings? Good. Go back to your station.”

14: “How many more do you have tonight?”

1: “No one else is urgent, but I might test out HOME-4 to make sure its servers are updating with the new conversations its happening. There’s always scavenging, too, for more parts.”

14: “Can’t believe the end of the world has so much work.”

1: “What’re you complaining about, kid? Aren’t you just doing some gardening and fucking around with the others?”

14: “Excuse you, I’m a radio engineer, 23 said so.”

1: “The radio?”

14: “Yeah, the scrambled radio transmission.”

1: “You’re the one making progress on it?”

14: “Yeah! My dad and I did ham radio, so I know about it.”

1: “Well shit kid, hope they’re paying you.”

14: “They sure aren’t. But uh… 23 said they’d talk to you guys about it.”

1: “What about it?”

14: “It’s from the Bay area.”

1: “Did the bot figure out which signal yet?”

14: “No… but I mean it takes a while to prepare for something like communicating back with them, or even, you know, visiting them.”

1: “Visiting them is a bit of a pipe dream kid. That part of the coast’s a while away. And there’s no reason to - we’ve got a lot of work to do here.”

14: “... Do you think the mission’s going to go well?”

1: “Yes.”

14: “Really? Even though the last ones went bad?”

1: “38 didn’t fail.”

14: “Yeah but like… all the others before it did. So why would this be any different.”

1: “Because 3 is with them.”

14: “And 3’s that good?”

1: “Well, 3 damn well better not leave without saying goodbye.”

14: “So like… you’re hoping everything’s okay?”

1: “What else do we have to do? I can’t do much from here, except fix some more bots.”

14: “We could always leave if 39 fails.”

1: “Leave - where? The coast?”

14: “Yeah. It… really looks like they have things going well there. And nothing works here - we can’t even go back to our homes and it’s just shit - there’s so much to do and -”

1: “Kid.”

14: “What?”

1: “Listen. That just isn’t going to happen, okay? Not unless literally nothing else works, or we have nothing left to do. I’m sure those coastal bastards don’t have it any better than we do, they’re just putting out their little message and getting by just like we are. We’re from here. This is our city - we’ve gotta try at least.”

14: “God you sound like 18.”

1: “Maybe it’s because for once, he’s got a point.”

14: “Whatever.”

1: “Things okay back in the living units?”

14: “You literally live 2 doors down. When you bother to come home, I mean.”

1: “Sleep’s for the weak, kid, we’ve got shit to do.”

14: “HOME-4 would disagree.”

1: “HOME-4 isn’t my mother. But anyways it’s about you - you’re out of the living area pretty frequently too. Is 18 treating you alright?”

14: “He’s fine.”

1: “Just fine?”

14: “Fine. I’m not here for a session. Just… think about it. Maybe we don’t actually have to fix everything and we can… leave.”

1: “Go to bed 14.”
