Wooo!
Final Ortho appointment was today! 😀
Is there a term for the affectation added to someone's voice or face that (ideally) lets other people know that they're joking?
So many times in my life, I'll be confused by something someone says or does with THE ABSOLUTE RIGHT EMOTION/APPEARANCE FOR SINCERITY, and A) the person will finally go "Dude, of COURSE I was joking, how could you not know I was joking???" or B) if I'm recounting this to another person, they will immediately assume/believe the first person was joking and have no sympathy for my confusion.
And my only defense will be, "But they weren't making it CLEAR they were joking! They didn't having the joking voice! Nor the joking face!"
The only exception to this is if the content of what they were saying is SO out of the realm of probability, SO out of character for them, that I know it's advanced sarcasm. But that takes a level of familiarity and context that can NOT be taken for granted. The joking face/voice is (or should be) absolutely necessary, and I'm so annoyed when it seems like I'm unreasonable for pointing this out.
