Jus Soli is granted in Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Fiji, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Jus Soli has been challenged in the US after the civil war, after the mass import of cheap labor from China for the deadly work of building the trans-continental railroad, and of Japanese-Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor. All of them involved the internment of people brought and born here legally. Do we need an imagined bogeyman every few generations in order to have something to argue about? For those unfamiliar the law of Jus Soli is in place in a limited fashion in most of Europe as well. It is intended to prevent stateless children becoming a world wide epidemic. If a child is born outside of their parents soil, most countries will not recognize them as citizens and refuse them any rights granted to its citizens.
