The Queen’s Bedchamber
The bedchamber had a function beyond merely sleeping at the court of Louis XVI. The Queen was expected to receive guests here every morning during her toilette - the formalised ritual instituted by Louis XIV and known as the Levée - in addition to presenting any royal children here shortly after giving birth.
The influence of all three queens who lived can be seen in this room. The ceiling’s partitions were the legacy of Maria Theresa, while the greyscale Rococo painting by François Boucher was commissioned by Marie Leszczyńska.
The rest of the furnishings, however, were chosen by Marie Antoinette, from the lavish jewellery cabinet in an alcove next to the bed to the portraits of her mother and brother, Empress Maria-Theresa and Joseph II.
Both the fabrics on the walls and bed have been rewoven according to their original designs in Lyon.
