My very first introduction to the concept of 'dark ship' was Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. And look, say what you want about the movies, but if you have read the actual books by Thomas Harris, you know the text itself absolutely backs it up. He really handed us that ending and just walked away.
The absolute brainrot this ship introduced into my creative psyche at a formative age is permanent. It completely rewired how I approach character dynamics, tension, and psychology in my own stories. You could probably see some of Lecter and Clarice in some of the AUs with Bianca and Sephiroth.
As someone who writes primarily to process personal trauma, there is something deeply cathartic about exploring dynamics that are messy, complicated, and entirely unconventional. Sometimes traditional, perfectly healthy fictional relationships don't give your brain the space it needs to unpack complex survival mechanisms or psychological grit.
Clannibal was the blueprint for that kind of exploration for me, and honestly? I still love them for it, and they still are.
