The finale dahoam on May 31 could be Thomas Müller's last Bayern game, as his contract is coming to an end. How have you been following the last few days, in which Müller's departure was publicly announced as a done deal?
Someone at Bayern must have said it. And it's definitely not good that it's become public. I would have liked Bayern and Müller to find a joint solution and announce the decision together at a press conference. Thomas Müller is not just any player. He is one of the greatest players in Bayern's history. He doesn't look good now due to the reports of the past few days - and above all, FC Bayern doesn't look good in the Müller case. They should have let Müller do it himself. But it shows once again: there is no gratitude in football.
What exactly do you mean by that?
Ottmar Hitzfeld made it clear to me at the end of my time at Bayern that he would focus on other players. That was hard for me, but fair. The club management around Franz Beckenbauer was also always honest with me. That has perhaps been lost a little today. It's always difficult for a player like Müller to make the leap if you want to play another year. Honesty from the club side is the most important thing.
Do you see Müller in a position of responsibility in Bayern management in the future?
With Philipp Lahm, it hasn't worked so far to integrate him into the club. I hope Bayern will deal with Müller differently. He is someone who would do Bayern a lot of good in the future.
