The idea of Photoshop is born in Ann Arbor

The software was developed in 1987 by two brothers Thomas and John Knoll. Thomas Knoll, a student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display.

This program caught the attention of his brother John, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended that Thomas turn it into a full-fledged image editing program.

A l'occasion de cet anniversaire, Thomas Knoll se remémore les débuts de cette application et du potentiel que représentait le travail avec des images numériques. so, i was reading about John Knoll on his Lucasfilm's profile. the bio first chats about the many movies he's been visual effects supervisor for, including personal faves like Pirates of the Caribbean, MI: Ghost Protocol, and Pacific Rim.

after talking about his college background and his time at Industrial Light & Magic, the last sentence of the bio is just perfect: "Teaming with his brother who was working on his doctoral thesis in computer vision at the University of Michigan, the two created Photoshop in 1987."
