Today in Haitian History - August 31, 1798 -- Toussaint Louverture negotiates with Thomas Maitland for English departure of Saint-Domingue 

Acting more and more as the head of Saint-Domingue, Toussaint Louverture, as opposed to the French Commissioner Gabriel Marie Joseph d’Hédouville, negotiated with English general Thomas Maitland for the withdraw of British troops that had invaded the island in 1793. Toussaint’s diplomatic discussions with Maitland showed vividly that he had, in essence, become the true leader of Saint-Domingue. He would act as the (almost) uncontested authority until the French Leclerc Expedition in 1801.
