Born in Ireland, Sergeant Thomas Plunkett of Co. E, 21st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1866 for his actions at the Battle of Fredericksburg. While acting as color bearer for his regiment, a blast from a cannon took off both of his arms and wounded his chest. Plunkett held onto the flag, pressing it to his chest with what was left of his arms, until another soldier relieved him. His recovery took over two years, and Battery Plunkett at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor is named in his honor. (x)
