It’s Robert Lowie Week! Why? Because I have only six pictures and Labor Day is coming up. Here is a rare picture from a Berose article on Lowie. The caption is: Standing left to right: Thomas Talbot Waterman, Paul Radin, Robert Lowie, Wilson Wallis. Sitting, from left to right: Joseph (the caption just says ‘Joseph’) and Alexander Goldenweiser. I have a soft spot in my heart for Wallis, who was a pioneering ethnographer of the Fresno Armenians and, along with Goldenweiser, a founder of the Reed anthropology department, my  alma mater.

‘His First Vote’ as painted by Thomas Waterman Wood in 1868, the first election after the civil war, more commonly know as ‘the period of reconstruction’. Read the results of that election here. Mr Wood was born in Montpelier, Vermont.
